I always played it G for the Em7. It fits withthe lead riff better.

Consider this to "bring out the flavor":
G: 3x0033; Altered G: 3x20035; D: 2x0235
I brush the g and d together, then pick the rest like you do. I hammer on from d note to e, to enter the second chord. Similarly, I lift off e to d for the 3rd chord then brush the f# note an d together.
