Copperhead Road  Steve Earle

To: cowpie@olga.net
Subject: Copperhead Road by Steve Earle
Status:
In response to waltx4@eagle.ca inquirey , the artist is Steve Earle
(Copperhead Road CD) and here's the song. I play it on my 12 string
mostly. I think because of the drone it should be played in D.
Well I've looked & looked, in my archive and can't find it. So here it
is by memory.
Greg - Now it turns out that Kitch - Rumpole@mortimer.com has already
submitted a tab version, but this version is probably worth submitting
also as it is a good 2nd guitar to your current submittal. Also, a very
simple guitar riff that works.
Intro - D as follows. G add sus 7. D (intro ) repeates through the
song.

[D]Well my names John Lee Pettimore
Same as my daddy n' his daddy before
You hardly ever saw grandaddy down here
He only come to town about twice a year
He'd buy a hundred pounds of yeast and some copper line
Everybody knew that he made moonshine
Now the r[G]evenue man wanted [G]gr[sus7]andaddy [G]bad[D]
He headed up the holler with everything he had
Befo[G]re my time but I've been[G] t[sus7]old[G]
He ne[D]ver come back from Copperheadhead Road
(repeat intro riff twice)
[D]Grandaddy ran whiskey in a big black Dodge
Bought it at the auction at the Mason's Lodge
Johnson County Sheriff painted on the side
Just shot coat of primer then he looked inside
Well him and my uncle tore that engine down
I can still remember that rumblin sound
Well the sheri[G]ff came around in the [G]mi[sus7]ddle of the [G]nite[D]
I heard momma cryin knew somethin wasn't right
He was h[G]eaded down to Knoxville with a[G] w[sus7]eekend [G]load[D]
You could smell the wiskey burnin down Copperhead Road
(Stacato) DDDDD DDDDD DDDDD DDDDD
Intro
[D]I volunteered for the army on my birthday
They draft the white trash first 'round here anyway
I did two tours of duty in Vietnam
I came home with a brand new plan
I take seeds from Columbia and Mexico
I plant it up the holler down Copperhead Road
Now the [G]DEA's got a c[G]ho[sus7]pper in the [G]air[D]
I wake up screaming like I'm back over there
I L[G]earned a thing or two from [G]ch[sus7]arlie don't[G] you know
