intro (play each chord for 4 bars):
OK! I have finally unlocked the mystery of the acoustic intro to this
song! It is tuned down a WHOLE step and played in E minor, so it sounds
like D minor. The real way David Gilmour played the four intro chords is
like this:
[Em9] [Cadd4] [Bsus2] [Bbsus2]

 1---2-----0-----0-----0--|
 2---3-----1-----2-----1--|
 3---0-----0-----4-----3--|
 4---2-----3-----4-----3--|
 5---------3-----2-----1--|
 6------------------------|

Of course, no one wants to tune down a whole step just for the first few
minutes of the song, so I invented a way to play it in standard tuning.
The chords are shown above, but for a recap here they are:
[Dm9] [Bbadd4] [Asus2] [Absus2]

 1---------1--------------|
 2---5-----3--------------|
 3---5-----3-----7-----7--|
 4---3-----1-----7-----6--|
 5---5-----1-----7-----6--|
 6---------------5-----4--|

Try it! It really works.

[Dm9] [Bbadd4] [Asus2] [Absus2]
You've [Dm9]got to be crazy, you've got to have a real need
You gotta [Bbadd4]sleep on your toes when you're on the street
You got to be able to pick out the easy meat with your [Asus2]eyes closed
Then moving in silently, downwind and out of sight
[Absus2]You've got to strike when the moment is right without thinking
[Dm9]After a while you can work on points for style, like the[Bbadd4] club tie
And the firm handshake, a sudden look in the eye, and an easy smile
You [Asus2]have to be trusted by the people that you lie to so that [Absus2]when
they turn their backs on you, you'll get the chance to put the knife in

in the sand-[Absus2]-just another sad old man all alone and dying of cance[Dm9]r

[Dm]And when you [C]lose control[Dm], [C] [Dm]you'll reap the [C]harvest you have [Dm]sown[C]
[Dm]And as the [C]fear grows,[Dm] [C] the [Dm]bad blood slows and turns to st[Bb]one[A]
[Dm]And it's [C]too [Dm]late to [C]lose the [Dm]weight you [C]used to [Dm]need to [C]throw around[Dm] [C]
So have a [Bb]good [C]drown, as you [Bb]go [C]down all alo[Dm]ne,[A] dragged [F]down [A]by the [Dm]stone
(dog bark and whistle interlude)
[Dm9] [Bbadd4] [Asus2] [Absus2]
[Dm9]Gotta admit that I'm a little bit confused
[Bbadd4]Sometimes it seems to me as if I'm just being used
[Asus2]Gotta stay awake, gotta try and shake off this creeping malaise
If I [Absus2]don't stand my own ground, how can I find my way out of this maze?
[Dm9]Deaf, dumb, and blind, you just keep on pretending
That [Bbadd4]everyone's expendable, and no one has a real friend
And it [Asus2]seems to you the thing to do would be to isolate the winner
[Absus2]Everything's done under the sun and you believe at heart everyone's a killer
