John Henry  Bruce Springsteen

I think Bruce plays this in a different key (F?), but I like the way this sounds.
Also, it sounds just as good (maybe better) if you omit the 7th chords and just use A or
G wherever there's an A7 or G7.
[D]Well John Henry was a little baby
Sittin' on his [C]dad[G]dy's k[A]nee
He picked [D]up a hammer and a l[G]ittle piece of s[G7]teel
And cried, "[D]Hammer's gonna [A]be death of [D]me, Lord, [G7]Lord
[D]Hammer's gonna [A7]be the death of [D]me"
[D]Now the captain he said to John Henry
"I'm gonna bring that s[C]team d[G]rill ar[A]ound
I'm gonna[D] bring that steam drill out [G]on these t[G7]racks
I'm gonna k[D]nock that s[A]teel on d[D]own, God, G[G7]od
I'm gonna k[D]nock that s[A7]teel on d[D]own"
[D]John Henry told his captain
"Lord a man ain't [C]nothin' [G]but a [A]man
But '[D]fore I let that s[G]team drill beat me d[G7]own
I'm gonna d[D]ie with a h[A]ammer in my h[D]and, Lord, L[G7]ord
I'll d[D]ie with a h[A7]ammer in my h[D]and"
[D]John Henry driving on the right side
That steam drill [C]driving [G]on the [A]left
Says, "'[D]fore I let your steam d[G]rill beat me d[G7]own
I'm gonna h[D]ammer mys[A]elf to d[D]eath, Lord, L[G7]ord,
I'll h[D]ammer my f[A7]ool self to d[D]eath"
[D]Well captain said to John Henry
"What is that [C]storm [G]I h[A]ear?"
John H[D]enry said, "That ain't no s[G]torm ca[G7]ptain
That's j[D]ust my h[A]ammer in the a[D]ir, Lord, L[G7]ord
That's j[D]ust my h[A7]ammer in the a[D]ir"
[D]John Henry said to his shaker
"Shaker, why [C]don't [G]you s[A]ing?
Cause I'm s[D]wingin' thirty pounds from my [G]hips on d[G7]own
Yeah, l[D]isten to my c[A]old steel r[D]ing, Lord L[G7]ord
[D]Listen to my c[A7]old steel r[D]ing"
[D]That John Henry he hammered in the mountains
His hammer was s[C]triki[G]ng f[A]ire
But he w[D]orked so hard it b[G]roke his h[G7]eart
John H[D]enry laid d[A]own his hammer and d[D]ied, Lord, L[G7]ord
John H[D]enry laid d[A7]own his hammer and d[D]ied
[D]Well, now John Henry he had him a woman
By the name of [C]Pol[G]ly [A]Ann
She walked o[D]ut to those tracks picked up J[G]ohn Henry's h[G7]ammer
And P[D]olly drove s[A]teel like a m[D]an, Lord, L[G7]ord
P[D]olly drove that s[A7]teel like a m[D]an
[D]Well every, every Monday morning
When a blue bird [C]he beg[G]ins to s[A]ing
You can h[D]ear John Henry from a m[G]ile or m[G7]ore
You can h[D]ear John H[A]enry's hammer r[D]ing, Lord, L[G7]ord
You can h[D]ear John H[A7]enry's hammer r[D]ing
I said you can hear John H[A]enry's hammer r[D]ing, Lord, L[G7]ord
You can h[D]ear John H[A7]enry's hammer r[D]ing
