I'm Not the Same Without You  Donald Fagen

I'm Not The Same Without You - Donald Fagen

 --------------------------------------------

From the album "Sunken Condos"
Transcribed/arranged by Howard Wright
hakwright (at) gmail (dot) com
This wonderfully lively track from Donald Fagen's new album
works nicely on the guitar, and the chord shapes and changes
are all fairly comfortable. The main exception is the
sequence with the crisp changes between Dm9 and G7 in the
verse/bridge sections - they're just a bit too quick to manage
easily. If the bass notes are dropped from the chords the fast
changes for that sequence are much more straight forward.
All chord shapes given at the end.

[Am7] [G7] [C7] [Bbmaj7(b5)] [E7sus4]
Substituting a C9 shape (x32333) in place of some of the C7 shapes works
well and gives some variety. You can also try the idea below, taken from
some of the piano figures used, where the note on the B string is "rolled"
up from D to D# to E (use hammer-ons with 2nd and 4th fingers).

 E---------|

B--3h4h5--|

 G--3------|
 D--5------|
 A--3------|
 E---------|

You might also want to try using a fuller shape for the E7sus4: 077700.
When the Bbmaj7(b5) chord is used the b5 (the top E) isn't always prominent
(hence the brackets), though it is usually implied. You can either play the
full chord with the E or omit it (giving a sparser sounding Bmaj7: 6x77xx)
[EADGBE]6x654x [EADGBE]5x543x
[cb]Ab/Bb[/cb] G/A
[EADGBE]x5777x [EADGBE]x3555x [EADGBE]x8x887 [E]x [A]7 [D]9 [G]7 [B]10 [E]7
D C F9b5(no3rd) E7sus4(vii)
The F9b5(no3rd) chord, as played on the keyboards, includes a D at the top
making it F13b5(no3rd). Unfortunately this chord doesn't fit nicely on the
guitar, so the simpler F9 shape has to be used.
[EADGBE]x79797 [E]x [A]8 [D]10 [G]9 [B]10 [E]8 [EADGBE]xx9887 [EADGBE]x0564x
E7(vii) Fmaj7(viii) Baug A7b5
[EADGBE]xx0563 [EADGBE]3x353x [EADGBE]x3545x [EADGBE]1x221x [EADGBE]07x775
[Dm11] [G7sus4] [Cmaj7] [Fmaj7] [D/E]
[EADGBE]x5355x [EADGBE]13124x [EADGBE]02013x [EADGBE]02010x
Dm9 F7 E7 E7*
For a sparser sound on the F7 and E7 shapes (which I prefer)
mute the A string and use shapes 1x124x, 0x013x and 0x010x
