Blue Ridge Mountains  Fleet Foxes

***********************************
"BLUE RIDGE MOUNTAINS"
by FLEET FOXES
off their 2008 self-titled album

*TUNING*
Double drop-D (DADGBD (low and high E both tuned down 1 whole step)) with a
capo on the 6th fret
*CHORD FORMS*
All chords are in relation to capo. I'm kind of fudging the names on some of
the chords for convenience's sake (namely the Dm13, Am11, and FM13; I didn't
know what else to call those ones without giving them ridiculously long
names), but it's close enough that you get the point. And of course, this
was done by ear and by watching live videos, and I didn't nitpick a WHOLE
lot, so there may be slight variations between this and the actual way it is
played. Just a disclaimer for you.
Some of these fingerings can be kind of tricky. Experiment with whatever is
comfortable for you and allows for quick chord changes.
Dm7(a)-000213
Dm13---000002
Dm7(b)-003210
Gm7----5x3333
DM7----004224
Cadd9--x32010
Bb-----x13333
Am11---x02010
FM13----33x210
~*~
The strumming pattern throughout is pretty basic. I think the slow intro
(and outro) is actually on mandolin, but you can easily play it on guitar if
you wanna play the song solo, maybe strumming softly with your thumb, then
switch to a pick when it gets fast.
As a brief note to avoid confusion, I put the chords to play *under* the
corresponding lyrics, *not* over.
~*~
*INTRO*
Dm7(a) Dm13 Dm7(b) Dm13 (x2)
Light up with me my dear,
[Dm7(a)]Light [Dm13]up. [Dm7(b)] [Dm13]
[Dm7(a)] [Dm13] [Dm7(b)] [Dm13]
[Dm7(a)] [Dm13] [Dm7(b)] [Dm13]

 Un------der stormy night, tell no-----body.

[Dm7(a)] [Dm13] [Dm7(b)] [Dm13] [Dm7(a)] [Dm13] [Dm7(b)] [Dm13] [Dm7(a)]
~*~
Then things speed up for the verse and continue the same Dm chord pattern
~*~
**VERSE 1**
Dm7(a) Dm13 Dm7(b) Dm13 x2
My brother where do you intend to go tonight?
[Dm7(a)]I heard that you [Dm13]missed your con[Dm7(b)]necting flight, [Dm13]
To[Dm7(a)] the blue ridge[Dm13] mountains, over n[Dm7(b)]ear Tennessee[Dm13].
[Gm7]
[Dm7(a)] [Dm13] [Dm7(b)] [Dm13]
**VERSE 2**
You're ever welcome with me any time you like,
[Dm7(a)]Let's drive to the[Dm13] country side, l[Dm7(b)]eave behind some g[Dm13]reen-eyed look-a-likes,
So no [Dm7(a)]one gets worr[Dm13]ied, no. [Dm7(b)] [Dm13] [Gm7]
So no one gets worried, no. [Dm7(a)] [Dm13] [Dm7(b)] [Dm13]
[Gm7] [Dm7(a)] [Dm13] [Dm7(b)] [Dm13]
**INTERLUDE**
But Sean don't get callous,
I'm [Gm7]sure it'll be f[Dm7]ine.
I lo[Gm7]ve you, I love you[Dm7],
Oh[Cadd9] brother of [Bb]mine.
[Am11]
~*~
Then a Bb chord is strummed for awhile while the piano and mandolin do their
thing
~*~
**REFRAIN**
In the quivering forest,
Where t[Bb]he shivering dog rests,
I will do [Cadd9]it grandfather,
Wilt to[Bb] wood and end.
And the [FM13]river got frozen,
And the [Bb]hole got snowed in,
And near[Cadd9] the moon glow ride,
Till[Bb] the morning light.
[FM13]
Terrible am I child?
[Bb]Even if you don't[Cadd9] mind,
[Bb]In the quivering for[Cadd9]est,
Where t[Bb]he shivering dog rests,
I will do [Cadd9]it grandfather,
Wilt to[Bb] wood and end.
And the [FM13]river got frozen,
And the [Bb]hole got snowed in,
And near[Cadd9] the moon glow ride,
Till[Bb] the morning light.
[FM13]
Terrible am I child?
[Bb]Even if you don't[Cadd9] mind,
[Bb]No[Cadd9]
[Bb] [Cadd9]
~*~
Then it plays the slow intro again
~*~
And that's it! Definitely not your typical folk song, but once you get over
the weird chords it's not too hard. Good luck! This took a lot of work, so
you best appreciate it! It's a beautiful song (as all of Fleet Foxes' songs
are) and is very fun to play once you get it down.
