Hallelujah  Leonard Cohen

*Credit fot the main verse/chorus tabbing goes to Paul SanLuis (he has the chords
for original song lyrics submitted on this site). Thank you Paul. :)
I love Jeff Buckley's rendition of this song, but it's kind of a sad message. I
just wanted to humbly submit this uplifting Christian version of the lyrics for
those so inclined. Hope you enjoy my first tab. It's not 100% but it works.
:)Thanks, Dave.
Standard tuning capo on 5th fret:Pronounce the "you" in 3rd line of each verse as "ya"
Intro: my version
slow individual string picking using chorus word timing without singing...
([G]Hal [G]le [Am]lu [Am]jah, [Am]hal [Am]le [Em]lu [Em]jah)
([G]hal [G]le [Am]lu [Am]jah, [Am]hal [Am]le [Em]lu [Em]jah ....)
([G]hal [G]le [D]lu [D]jah, [D]hal [D]le [Am]lu [Am]jah ....)
Am Am Em B7#5 C pause... D - G Em7 G Em7
(hal le lu uuu uuuuuu jah....)quick switch leading into verse notes...
Vs 1: low key singing, almost whispering...
I [G]heard there was a [Em7]secret chord
That [G]David played and it [Em7]pleased the lord;
A [C]song of honest [D]worship, Jesus, [G]to ya. [D]
Well, [G]I don't know if I [C]have his [D]gift
With [Em]psalms the Father [C]to uplift,[D7]
The [D]blessed king c[B7]omposing hallel[Em7]ujah.
Chorus:
Halle[C]lujah, halle[Em]lujah, halle[C]lujah, halle[G]lu-u-[D]u-u-j[G]ah ..[Em7].. [G] [Em7]
Vs 2: still low key singing but with more emphasis...
Your [G]faith was strong so you [Em7]felt aloof
You [G]saw her bathing [Em7]on the roof.
Her [C]beauty and the [D]moonlight over[G]threw ya.[D]
Then [G]you fell down that [C]icy [D]slope,
That [Em]one mistake, it [C]cost you[D7] hope
When [D]from your lips she [B7]drew the halle[Em7]lujah
Chorus:
Halle[C]lujah, halle[Em]lujah, halle[C]lujah, halle[G]lu-u-[D]u-u-j[G]ah ..[Em7].. [G] [Em7]
Vs 3: Low key singing becoming very mournful halfway through...
There [G]was a time you [Em7]told the Lord
The [G]secrets that your [Em7]heart had stored,
But [C]straying meant the [D]link was torn be[G]tween ya.[D]
You [G]tried to hide the [C]sin from [D]sight,
But, [Em]on your knees, wept [C]in the [D7]night,
With a [D]guilty and a [B7]broken halle[Em7]lujah.
Chorus * 2: both times with words (mournful) followed by instrumental
Halle[C]lujah, halle[Em]lujah, halle[C]lujah, halle[G]lu-u-[D]u-u-jah ....
Halle[C]lujah, halle[Em]lujah, halle[C]lujah, halle[G]lu-u-[D]u-u-j[G]ah ..[Em7]..[G] [Em7]
After second chorus lead into instrumental...
[Am] [Am] [C-D] [G] [G] [D]
G G C-D Em Em B7 B7,
[G] [G] [G] [D] [C]
C Em D D7 pause...then into Vs 4
Vs 4: Louder, more certain singing...build in tempo/crescendo halfway through...
Je[G]sus, he's been [Em7]through this door.
He's [G]seen your faults and [Em7]mine before.
He p[C]aid the price, and [D]purged that sin right[G] through ya. [D]
Now [G]remember when he [C]made you [D]whole
And the [Em]holy spirit [C]stirred your [D7]soul,
And [D]every moment [B7]lived was halle[Em7]lujah
Chorus * 2: second time without words
emphasize first "Hallelujah"
Halle[C]lujah! halle[Em]lujah, halle[C]lujah, halle[G]lu-u-[D]u-u-jah ....
[C] [Em] [C] [G] [D] [G] [Em7] [G] [Em7]
Vs 5: Loud and triumphant singing building to exultant!
Well, [G]I love Jesus, [Em7]up above,
Who [G]taught me of [Em7]amazing love;
C D G D D D (hold two beats)
The One who died to draw us back, Lord, to ya.
Now [G]Christians saved by [C]His great [D]grace
Can [Em]look towards the [C]Saviour`s[D7] face
And [D]raise their voice in [B7]glorious halle[Em7]lujah!
Chorus * 3:
go High on the last "Hallelujah"
Halle[C]lujah, halle[Em]lujah, halle[C]lujah, halle[G]lu-u-[D]u-u-jah ....
Emphasize First Two "Hallelujahs", then lower, and drag out and hold last
"Hallelujah" while playing the notes for another full chorus length...
Halle[C]lujah! halle[Em]lujah, halle[C]lujah, halle[G]lu-u-[D]u-u-uuu ....
uuuuu[C]uuuuuuuuuuuu[Em]uuuuuuuuuuuu[C]uuuuuuuuuuuu[G]uuuuu[D]uuuuuuu ....
then final chorus in low, slow and gentle singing...
