ILLEGAL SMILE

John Prine

----------

----------

 GDCG
When I woke up this morning, things were lookin' bad
 CGDG
seems like total silence is the only friend I have
 DCGCG
a bowl of oatmeal tried to stare me down... and won
 DCGCG
and it was twelve o'clock before I realized that I was havin' no fun
 DGCDG
but fortunately I have the key to escape reality
step up to) C G
and you may see me tonight with an illegal smile
 DG
it don't cost very much, but it lasts a long while
(step up to) C G
won't you please tell the man I didn't kill anyone
 DCG
no I was just tryin' to have me some fun
 GDCG
last time I checked my bankroll, well it was gettin' thin
 CGDG
sometimes it seems like the bottom is the only place I've been
 DCGCG
chased a rainbow down a one-way street... dead end
 DCGCG
and all my friends turned out to be insurance salesmen
 GDCG
sat down in my closet with all my overalls
 CGDG
just tryin' to get away from all the years inside these walls
 DCGCG
dreamed the police heard everything I thought... what then?
 DCGCG
well I went to court and the judge's name was Hoffman

The walk from the one chord walks up to the fourth not the fifth as notated here. Also the song on the record is in c so put a capo on the fifth fret and play in g as written here. A lot of the song on this record have a capo in the fifth position. Sam Stone is one of them and Hello in There is another which is just a beautiful song.
