South Hill  Tim Barry

I'm uploading this because I couldn't seem to find it online and had to
self-teach it by ear. If I've gotten the chords wrong, I apologize, let me
know and I'll try to fix it. One way or another, I'm putting this here so
someone else can get the same enjoyment out of this song that I do.
Intro: E
[E]When my girl got pregnant well I dropped right out of school
But there's no work in South Hill so [A]what else could I do?
The recruiter's came-a-knocking when this [E]whole damn thing began
They promised me a college education food and [B5]medi[E]cine
[E]They said I wouldn't spend a dime if I got deployed overseas
Plus Baghdad is safer now than old [A]Washington, DC
So I signed that dotted line right quick and in a[E] blink of an eye
I found myself at Fort Benning where I [B5]practiced [E]forming lines
[E]Well Fallujah became my home, my comfort and my dread
The marines that came through first man they [A]tore this place to shreds
With the sound of crushing Amtracs and the [E]whine of their Humvee's
Calling in them A-10 air strikes man I [B5]wish I could have [E]seen it
[E]But when we got to town I realized we were only legs
We do dismounted patrols we do [A]searches and do raids
We hear the crack of small arms fire and the [E]blast from IED's
We hurry up and wait, suck in [B5]dust and stay low [E]key
[B5]And I cannot stop this [A]pounding in my [E]head
[B5]I thought we were doing right but that's not what [A]folks back home have [E]said
[A]Sometimes I can't tell [B5]which way is [E]up or which is [A]down
But I'm oddly at ease with this [B5]chaos all ar[A]ound
[E]Then one day out on patrol doing time out in the heat
We were ordered to a neighborhood to talk to [A]folks out on the street
To gather information on where some [E]weapons may be stored
Or to see if the Mujahideen had hauled them off out of [B5]Fallujah and to the [E]north
[E]Well my platoon got lost and made more then one wrong turn
We should have called in our position fast but we [A]blamed each other first
Then we started taking sniper fire - [E]god damn them all
We couldn't find the shooter no where he had us [B5]pinned down one and [E]all
[E]Well friendies they caught up and we took back that god damned street
But something wasn't right and I [A]was feeling really weak
My adrenaline was high and I was scared and [E]I could hardly breathe
I heard doc argue with the Sarg that [B5]morphine might kill [E]me
[E]That's the last thing I remember that and heat and clear blue sky
And thinking about my girl back home and my [A]daughters little eyes
I took that bullet in Fallujah and I'm laid [E]up in Germany
And I'm headed back stateside to the care of [B5]Walter [E]Reed
[B5]And I cannot feel a [A]thing below my [E]waist
[B5]Doc tried to help me [A]man but it was too [E]late
[A]Now I don't know [B5]who is [E]right or who is [A]wrong
But I'm fucked up and I [B5]want to go back [E]home
[B5]And I cannot stop this [A]pounding in my [E]head
[B5]I thought we were doing right but that's not what [A]folks back home have [E]said
[A]Sometimes I can't tell [B5]which way is [E]up or which is [A]down
But one day I'll stand [B5]firmly on the [E]ground
Yes one day I'll stand [B5]firmly on the [E]ground
