Can't Carry On
(N. Finn)
NOTE:
-- Another of these songs where, although I've given chords, what Neil
Finn is playing guitar-wise is a chord with different, little fills in
between the lyric lines.
[Bm]Why do I kid myself
Why do I scream for pleasure
[Em]It's four in the mo[F#]rning should know [Bm]better
But she can weave a spell
Want it to last forever
[Em]Making me [F#]feel like somebody [Bm]special
CHORUS
[A]Can't carry on this [F#]way (just [G]go to [A]sleep)
Before it gets too [F#]late (just [G]go to [A]sleep)
Doing damage to my [F#]brain (just [G]go to [A]sleep)
Well here we go [F]again
Though I look everywhere
I never seem to find it
Always a shadow around a corner
Drown it in alcohol
Stuck in the elevator
Hard to remember in the morning
Chorus
Tell you about myself
If you're in the mood to listen
Baby you don't know who you're kissing
This is a lonely world
You are a strange companion
When you get what you wanted
You want to leave
[A]Honestly I want to [F#]free my[G]self[A]
From the burden of in[F#]action[G] [A]
Honestly I want to ra[F#]ise [G]myself[A]
To any plane I can i[F#]magine[G] [A]
Honestly I want to free myself
From the burden of inaction
Honestly I want to raise myself
To any plane I can imagine
[B]Can't carry on this [E]way (just go to [B]sleep)
Before it gets too [E]late [B]
Doing damage to my [E]brain (just go to [B]sleep)
Well here we go [E]again[B]

Don't Dream It's Over
(N. Finn)
NOTES:
-- Neil's guitar is tuned down one half-step for this song. If
you're going to try and play along, you'll have to do the same.
-- For all you bar chord haters, this is one song you won't like. Every
chord is a bar chord. of course, you don't -have- to play it that way.
the first chord is on the 7th fret, second is on the 4th, etc. if you
are having any difficulties with these chords, contact me (marck@nwu.edu).
INTRO: E(9)* E9* E7sus*

While you're [G#]traveling with me
CHORUS

[A]Hey now, [B]hey now
When the [E(9]world comes [C#(9]in
[A]They come, [B]they come
[E(9]To build a wall be[C#(9]tween us
[A]We know they won't win[B]

My possessions are causing me suspicion but there's no proof

But you turn right over to the T.V. page

Hole in the River
(N. Finn/ E. Rayner)
NOTES:
-- For the intro, if you sit on an Em chord on the 7th fret (X79987),
you can find your way around the main melody line of the keyboard that
Eddie Rayner is playing. (The guitar part at that point is just doing
that damped string/percussive thing, so when playing it alone on an
acoustic, it helps to play around on the Em.)
-- The psychedelic instrumental break is composed entirely on C#m (a
last-minute idea from Nick Seymour that saved this song from being
scrapped.) All the fun stuff is going on in the keyboards, while the
guitar just sits on that one chord. I would suggest creating a guitar
solo for this section (which is what Neil does when it's performed
live).

I Walk Away
(N. Finn)
NOTES:
-- the opening of this song and the verses use a lot of limited picking
of just a few strings. the best thing to do is check out the "unusual

that you're actually fingering.

Love You 'Til the Day I Die

NOTES:
-- Listening to this song, the guitar work sounds very complex. I
was pleasantly surprised to find out that the verses are constructed
on two chords. However, Neil is adding a lot of other little licks
and "side chords" in between to make things interesting. (for exam-
ple, one of his faves is an Em form like this:  X7978[10].)  I would
suggest you do your own goofing around and figure out what works.
-- The bridge ("Frost on the window pane...") is particularly tricky
in this song, but once you get the fingerings down, it flows beauti-
fully.

most of the way through, and minimize the use of the two highest strings.

Mean To Me
(N. Finn)
She came [E]all the [A]way from A[C#m]merica
Had a [A]blind date with [Bsus]destiny[B]
And the [E]sound of [A]Te Awamu[C#m]tu
Had a [Bsus]truly sacred ring[B]
Now her [A]parents are di[E]vorced
And her [G#]friend's committing [A]suicide
I [B]could not es[E]cape
A plea from the [A]heart
You know what it [D]means to me[B]
She said don't walk a[E]way
I'm down on my [A]knees
So please don't be [D]mean to me[B]
So I talked to you for an hour
In the bar of a small town hotel
You asked me what I was thinking
I was thinking of a padded cell
With a black and white T.V.
To stop us from getting lonely
I could not escape
A plea from the heart
You know what it means to me
She said don't walk away
I'm down on my knees
So please don't be mean to me
No, I could not escape
A plea from the heart
Mysterious sympathy
I couldn't wait for a chance
To walk out the door
You know what it [D]means to me[B] [C#m]
[A]I saw you lying in the arms of a poet[C#m]
[A]I heard him tell you t...tantalizing [C#m]lies  (about me)
[A]Well whad'd'ya know, [B]whad'd'ya know

You're down on the floor

To walk out the door

I know I could never let you down

World Where You Live
(N. Finn)
NOTE:
-- The opening is, obviously, a keyboard part, which is easily
reproduced on guitar using both the Em9, Em, and A(9) chords. with
a little bit of work you should be able to find it, but if you
have problems, don't hesitate to ask (marck@nwu.edu).
INTRO: Em9* A(9)* Em9 A(9)

Do you climb into space
To the world where you live
The world where you [G]live[A] [D]
