Vincent

Don McLean

VERSE 1

 GAm
Starry starry night, paint your palette blue and grey,
 C
look out on a summer's day with
 D7G
eyes that know the darkness in my soul.
 GAm
Shadows on the hills, sketch the trees and the daffodills
 C
catch the breeeze and the winter chills, in
 D7GAmBmAmG
colors on the snowy linen land.

CHORUS

 AmD7G
Now I understand, what you tried to say to me,
 EmAm7
how you suffered for your sanity,
 D7Em
how you tried to set them free -
 A7Am7
They would not listen they did not know how,
 D7G
         perhaps they'll listen now.

VERSE 2

 GAm
Starry starry night, flaming flowers that brightly blaze,
 C
 swirling clouds in violet haze
 D7G
reflect in Vincent's eyes of china blue.
 GAm
Colors changing hue, morning fields of amber grain,
 C
weathered faces lined in pain are
 D7G
soothed beneath the artists' loving hand.

REPEAT CHORUS

BRIDGE

 GAm7
For they could not love you,
 D7GG/F#E
but still your love was true,
 Am7
and when no hope was left in sight
 Cm
          on that starry starry night
 GF7E7
you took your life as lovers often do.
 Am7
But I could have told you Vincent,
 CD7
this world was never meant for one as beautiful as you.

VERSE 3

 GAm
Starry starry night, portraits hung in empty halls,
 C
frameless heads on nameless walls with
 D7G
eyes that watch the world and can't forget.
 G
Like the strangers that you've met,
 Am
the ragged men in ragged clothes,
 C
the silver thorn of bloody rose lie
 D7G
crushed and broken on the virgin snow.

CHORUS B

 AmD7G
Now I think I know, what you tried to say to me,
 EmAm7
how you suffered for your sanity,
 D7Em
how you tried to set them free -
 A7Am7
They would not listen, they're not listening still,
 D7G
         perhaps they never will.

The original was very nice. I have merely corrected some spelling and minor lyrics errors. I also changed the formatting slightly to shorten some lines so they would print properly, and to clarify the song structure. Hope this is useful to others who love this extraordinarily beautiful song.
