Tangled up in Blue

Bob Dylan

 AG
Early one morning the sun was shinin'
 AG
 I was layin' in bed.
 AG
Wondering if she'd changed at all
 D
If her hair was still red.
 AG
Her folks said our lives together,
 AG
 Sure was gonna be rough.
 AG
They never did like Mama's home-made dress,
 D
Papa's bank book wasn't big enough.
 EF#m
And I was standing on the side of the road,
 AD
 Rain falling on my shoes.
 EF#m
Heading out for the  east coast,
 AD
Lord knows I've paid some dues,
 E
Getting through,
 GDAAsus4AAsus4
 Tangled up in blue.
 AG
She was married when we first met
 AG
 Soon to be di-vorced
 AG
helped her out of a jam I guess
 D
But I used a little too much force
 AG
We drove that car as far as we could
 AG
A-bandoned it out west
 AG
Split up on a dark sad night
 D
Both a-greeing it was best
 EF#m
She turned around to look at me
 AD
As I was walking a-way
 EF#m
heard her say over my shoulder
 AD
We'll meet again some day
 E
On the ave-nue
 GDAAsus4AAsus4
 Tangled up in blue.
 AG
I had a job in the great north woods
 AG
Working as a cook for a spell
 AG
But I never did like it all that  much
 D
And one day the axe just fell
 AG
So I drifted down to New Orleans
 AG
Where I was lucky to be em-ployed
 AG
Workin' for a while on a fishing boat
 D
Right outside of Delacroix
 EF#m
But all the while I was alone
 AD
The past was close be-hind
 EF#m
seen alot of women
 AD
But she never escaped my mind
 E
Love just grew
 GDAAsus4AAsus4
 Tangled up in blue.
 AG
She was working in topless place
 AG
And I stopped in for a beer
 AG
just kept looking at the side of her face
 D
In the spotlight so clear
 AG
And later on when the crowd thinned out
 AG
I was just about to do the same
 AG
She was standing there in back of my chair
 D
Sayin' "Tell me, don't I know your name?"
 EF#m
I muttered something under-neath my breath
 AD
She studied the lines on my face
 EF#m
I must admit I felt a little uneasy
 AD
When she bent down to tie the laces
 E
Of my shoe
 GDAAsus4AAsus4
 Tangled up in blue.
 AG
She lit a burner on the stove
 AG
And offered me a pipe
 AG
thought you'd never say hel-lo she said
 D
You look like the silent type
 AG
Then she opened up a book of poems
 AG
And handed it to me
 AG
 Written by an I-talian poet
 D
From the thirteenth century
 EF#m
And every one of them words rang true
 AD
And glowed like burning coal
 EF#m
 Pourin' off of every page
 AD
Like it was written in my soul
 E
From me to you
 GDAAsus4AAsus4
 Tangled up in blue.
 AG
lived with them on Montague Street
 AG
In a basement down the stairs
 AG
There was music in the ca-fes at night
 D
And revo-lution in the air
 AG
Then he started into dealing with slaves
 AG
And something inside of him died
 AG
She had to sell every-thing she owned
 D
And froze up inside.
 EF#m
And when finally the bottom fell out
 AD
 I became with-drawn
 EF#m
The only thing I knew how to do
 AD
Was to keep on keeping on
 E
Like a bird that flew
 GDAAsus4AAsus4
 Tangled up in blue.
 AG
So now I'm going on back again
 AG
I got to get to her some how
 AG
All the people we used to know
 D
They're an il-lusion to me now
 AG
 Some are mathema-ticians
 AG
 Some are carpenters wives
 AG
Don't know how it all got started
 D
I don't know what they're doing with their lives
 EF#m
But me, I'm still on the road
 AD
 Headin' for another joint
 EF#m
We always did feel the same
 AD
We just saw it from a different point
