Ten Degrees and Getting Colder

(G) He was standing by the highway
with a (C) sign that says just (G) Mother,
When he heard a driver coming
about a (Am) half a mile a-(D)-way,
So he (G) held the sign up higher
so no (C) decent soul could (G) miss it,
It was (C) ten degrees or (G) colder
down by (D) Boulder Dam that (G) day,

He was raised up in Milwaukee
though (C) he never was that (G) famous,
He was just a road musician
to the (Am) taverns he would (D) go,
Singing (G) songs about the rambling,
the (C) loving girls and (G) gambling,
How the (C) world fell on his (G) shoulders
back in (D) Boulder, I don't (G) know,

Well it was out in Arizona
and he (C) heard the lady (G) listening,
To each word that he was saying,
to each (Am) line that he would (D) write,
So he (G) sat down by her table
and they (C) talked about the (G) weather,
Ninety (C) eight point six and (G) rising
down by (D) Boulder Dam that (G) day,

She told him she would take him
for a (C) ride in the morning (G) sun,
Back in Boulder he had told her
I don't (Am) know when I've had a better (D) friend,
Now he's (G) traded off his Martin,
but his (C) troubles are not (G) over,
His (C) feet are almost (G) frozen
and the (D) sun is sinking low,

Won't you (G) listen to me brother,
if you (C) ever loved your (G) mother,
Please pull off on the shoulder
if you're (D) going Milwaukee way,
It's ten (C) degrees and getting (G) colder
down by (D) Boulder Dam (G) today.
