Use a strong alternating bass. Tennessee Three uses a "boom-clicka-boom-clicka-boom" sound, listen to the record and it should gel for you.

First verse is correct, but the song changes keys every verse.. thats the unique thing about the song. Key changes are: E-->A-->D-->A-->E, using a 12-cord blue progression in each key, and using an alternating baseline between each to get into the next key without sounding awkward.. just listen to the song.
