Diamonds And Rust  Joan Baez

from; "Diamonds & Rust, 1975
Well [Em]I'll be damned
Here comes your [C]ghost again
But that's not u-[G]nusual
Its just that the [D]moon is full
And you happened to [Em]call
. . .
And [Em]here I sit
Hand on the [C]telephone
I'm hearing a [G]voice I'd known
A couple of [D]light years ago
Heading straight for a [Em]fall
. . .
As I re-[Em]member,
Your eyes were bluer than [C]robins' eggs
My poetry was [G]lousy you said
Where are you [D]calling from?
A booth in [Em]midwest
. . .
[Em]Ten years ago
I bought you some [C]cuff-links
You bought me [G]something
We both know what [D]memories can bring
They bring diamonds and [Em]rust
. . .
You [Em]burst on the scene
Already a [C]legend
The unwashed phe-[G]nomenon
The original [D]vagabond
You strayed into my [Em]arms
. . .
And [Em]there you stayed
Temporarily [C]lost at sea
The madonna was [G]yours for free
The girl on the [D]half-shell
Could keep you un-[Em]harmed
[Bm]Now I see you standing with brown leaves falling all around
And snow in your [Am]hair
Now [Bm]you're smiling out of the window of that crummy hotel
Over Washington [Am]square
Our [C]breath comes out of white clouds
Mingles and hangs in the [G]air
Speaking[Fmaj7] strictly for me
We both could have died then and [G]there  [B7]
Now [Em]you're telling me
You're not nos-[C]talgic
Then give me another [G]word for it
You who are so [D]good with words
And keeping things [Em]vague
. . .
'Cos I [Em]need some of that vagueness now
Its all come back too [C]clearly
Yes I loved you [G]dearly
And if you're offering [D]diamonds and rust
I've already [Em]paid

The picking sequence for the opening bar is as follows, repeated - slide up 2 frets, D string, to get base run sequence. The remainder uses the same style picking out the base runs (which you can get from the record) using the chords shown.

[Em]

G|----0---0---0---0---0--0-|
D|---- -----2---4---2------|
A|----- 2---------------2--|
E|--0----------------------|

Between verses, play base on D string from fret 2 to 4 to 2 to 4 to 5 to 4 to 5 then to G string 4th fret, then move to B7 shape before returning to the Em sequence. Play Fmaj7 using standard F-shape with open top E.
