The Eagle And The Hawk  John Denver

[D]I am the eagle, I live in high country,
in rocky cathedrals that reach to the s[C]ky.
[D]I am the hawk and there’s blood on my feathers,
but time is still turning, they soon will be d[C]ry.
And a[D]ll those who see me, and all who believe in me,
share in the freedom I feel when I f[F]ly.  [E]     [A]
Come da[D]nce with the [D/C]west wind and t[G/B]ouch on the m[A]ountain tops.
S[D]ail o’er the [Bm]canyons and [G]up to the st[A]ars.
Re[D]ach for the [D/C]heavens and [G/B]hope for the f[D]uture
and [D/C]all that we [G/B]can be and [Em]not we a[A]re.
(Outro)
E(8) E(6) E(4) E(2) E (as per the intro)

(Note 1)

The chords in the intro are the E shape played at various positions on the fretboard as
I have named them E plus a number – the number marks the fret that your first finger is on.

E(8) E(6) E(4) E(2) E
1 E --0----0----0----0----0--|
2 B --0----0----0----0----0--|
3 G --8----6----4----2----1--|
4 D --9----7----5----3----2--|
5 A --9----7----5----3----2--|
6 E --0----0----0----0----0--|

(Note 2)

The song is 3/4 time but in the second half of the intro the arrangement has a 6/8 feel.
For a solo guitar you can get the feel of these two rhythms like this:

Standard 3/4 time – one stress on the first beat of each bar.

< <
   |-1-2-3-4-5-6-|-1-2-3-4-5-6-|

D D U D U D U D U D U

6/8 feel – stress on the 1st and 4th half beats of the bar. I've suggested 2 strumming
The 1st is harder because you have to create the rhythm by volume on the upstroke at
4th half beat - it's easy to drift back into a 3/4 count. The 2nd strum is a little
It creates the emphasis by missing out the downstroke on the 3rd beat. If you're not
start with this strum and add the downstroke in as you improve.

< < < <
   |-1-2-3-4-5-6-|-1-2-3-4-5-6-|

D U D U D U D U D U D U
or D U D U U D U D U U
