Don McLean plays this song in "Dropped D"

Start in the chord of "D" for the intro playing the notes: (in D)A,B,D,(in Em)E, then to A7, then back to D.
For the first bar of the verse, play a high D chord at the 5th fret, i.e.: i on 1st string, 5th fret; m on 3rd string, 7th fret; r on 2nd string, 7th fret.
For the next bar, just move your m finger down one fret until you have a sort of "Dm shape". For the next bar, move your hand down (still keeping the "Dm shape" two frets. The back to D.
