In the D major version, and I'm getting this from TVZ's own recording of the song as appears on the movie soundtrack CD, "Townes Van Zandt: Be Here To Love Me", the opening uses a -7- chord progression rather than the -5- chord progression as shown.
The chords are D/G/D/A/D/G/D. It begins in D, moves to G on the word 'watching', to D on the word 'sun', to A on the word 'hoping' to D on the word 'stars' to G on the word 'it's' and to D on the word 'shine' -- so too, if you want to play along with TVZ [** cut #2 on the CD] , he does the song with the capo on the 2nd fret. The chorus part is AGD -- AGD.
Finally, TVZ himself would often use 'varying' lyrics of his own songs depending on, how to put it, his 'condition' [!] the time and in this song from the CD he uses "Babe [versus 'baby'] and I [the word 'are' is dropped] lyin' here" or "And leaves [dropping the word 'she' before the word 'leaves'] her endings" or he uses, "Bad rhymes and fine lines". All the song word 'g' endings are dropped as he sings "watchin'" [for 'watching'] and "livin'", "laughin'", "lyin'", "dancin'" and in one case, near the end, he sings "Babe and I wonderin' " and instead of "Living is sighing", TVZ sings, "Livin' ain't lyin' ." As I say, the wordage used by TVZ often depended on TVZ's 'condition' at the time he sang the song, either 'live' ... or in the studio.
In other words, I am 'not' faulting the original poster's rendition of the lyrics but the song wordage often did vary with TVZ's situation and condition at the time. It's no secret to TVZ fans [and I'm one of them, having played his many songs for some years now] that TVZ would all too often perform [** live or in the studio] under the influence of either alcohol or drugs ... or both. Hence, the wordage could and in fact would vary as he originally wrote the song.
