city of new orleans  Arlo Guthrie

R[C]idin' on the C[G]ity of New O[C]rleans,
Il[Ami]linois Central, Mon[F]day morning rai[C]l.[G]
There's 1[C]5 cars and 1[G]5 restless r[C]iders,
and [Ami]3 conductors, 2[G]5 sacks of m[C]ail.
They're [Ami]out on a south-bound odeyssey,
the t[Emi]rain pulls out of Kankakee,
ro[G]llin' past the houses, farms, and fi[D]elds.
And the p[Ami]assin' towns that have no name,
f[Emi]reight yards full of old black men,
and the grav[G]eyards of [G7]rusted automo[C]biles.
CHORUS:
[F]Good morning A[G]merica. How [C]are you?
Say, [Ami]don't you know me? I[F]'m your native s[C]on.[G]
I'm the t[C]rain they call the C[G]ity of New O[Ami]rleans[D7].
I'll be gone 5[F]00 m[G]iles when the day is d[C]one.
Verse:2
Dealin' c[C]ard games with the o[G]ld men in the c[C]lub car,
P[Ami]enny a point ain't [F]no one keepin' sc[C]ore,[G]
Won't you p[C]ass the paper b[G]ag that holds the b[C]ottle,
Yeah, and f[Ami]eel the wheels a-gr[G]umblin' 'neath the fl[C]oor,
And the s[Ami]ons of pullmen porters, and the [Emi]sons of engineers,
ride their fa[G]thers' magic carpet made of st[D]eel.
Mo[Ami]thers with their babes asleep,
are r[Emi]ockin' to the gentle beat,
and the rh[G]ythm of the ra[G7]ils is all they f[C]eel.
- REPEAT CHORUS -
Verse:3
N[C]ight time on the C[G]ity of New O[C]rleans,
c[Ami]hangin' cars in Me[F]mphis Tenn[C]essee,[G]
Ha[C]lfway home, we[G]'ll be there by mo[C]rnin',
through the Mi[Ami]ssissippi darkness,
rol[G]lin' down to the s[C]ea.
But [Ami]all the towns and people seem,
to f[Emi]ade into a bad dream,
and the s[G]teel rail, still ain't heard the n[D]ews.
The con[Am]ductor sings his songs again,
the pa[Emi]ssengers will please refrain,
this tr[G]ain's got tt disappe[G7]ar in' them railroad b[C]lues.
- REPEAT CHORUS -
- lAST LINE OF CHORUS & END -

One Hit Wonder 69 (report)

Instead of trying this capo'd on the 6th fret, you can also play it as if it was in G (use the transpose feature in Chordie and tune down 5 semi-tones to get to G) then tune your guitar down a half step. That's likely what Arlo did.

chmoo (report)

Arlo didn't write this song.

Steve Goodman did.

I'll be [Bb]gone five [C]hundred [D]miles when the day is [G]done. Can someone correct this please?

homebrewer (report)

this is also very good beginning mandolin song

jdicredico (report)

If you want to play along with Arlo's version, you need to Capo the 6th fret. I've noticed that several popular songs (Mr. Bojangles, Sound of Silence, etc.) are played in F# by the original artist, so they are a little difficult for us beginners....

The wording of the song has errors and the chordes have errors.

I may fix this song myself later on when I get the time.

I like this song the rythum is excellent. kinda makes me feel the rythum of the train.

In the chorus, I believe it's Bb (not B)in the last line.
