The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down  Robbie Robertson

[C]
[Am]Virgil C[C/G]ain is my name and I s[F]erved on the D[Em]anville tr[Dm]ain,
[Am]Till Stonewall's c[C/G]avalry came and t[F]ore up the t[Em]racks ag[Dm]ain.
[C/E]In the winter of s[F]ixty-five we were h[C]ungry, just [Dm]barely alive.
[C/E]By May the tenth R[F]ichmond had fell.
It was a t[C]ime I rem[Dm]ember all so w[D]ell.

The n[C/G]ight they dr[F]ove old Dixie d[C/G]own,
And the b[F]ells were ringing.
The n[C/G]ight they dr[F]ove old Dixie d[C/G]own,
And the p[F]eople were singing.  They went...
"n[C/G]a na na [Am]na na na, [G]na na na na na [F]na na na na."

[Am]Back with my wife in [C/G]Tennessee, when one [F]day she called to [Dm]me.
[Am]"Virgil, [C/G]quick!  Come see!  [F]There goes Robert E. [Dm]Lee!"
[C/E]Now I don't mind I'm [F]chopping wood,
And I [C]don't care if the [Dm]money's no good.
[C/E]You take what you need and you l[F]eave the rest,
[F]But they should [C/E]never have [Dm]taken the very [D]best.
refrain

[Am]Like my father b[C/G]efore me, [F]I work the l[Dm]and.
[Am]And like my brother [C/G]above me, [F]I took a rebel s[Dm]tand.
[C/E]He was just eighteen, [F]proud and brave,
But a [C]Yankee laid him [Dm]in his grave.
[C/E]I swear by the blood be[F]low my feet,
You can't [C/E]raise a Caine back [Dm]up when he's in [D]defeat.

Additionally, it should read "Stoneman's Cavalry" not stonewall's. Stoneman was a yankee general particularly hated in the area.

That Bm in the first line of the first verse seems like a mistake. It's not repeated in any other verse. Also, the line "I don't mind I'm chopping wood" should read, "I don't mind 'em chopping wood."
