What Its Like Everlast
CHORDS:
-------
Dm ([EADGBE]xx0231) Dsus4 ([EADGBE]xx0233)
Fmaj7 (xx3210) E* (xxx453)
C (x32010)
I'm transcribing this from the LP version, not the single.
If I remember correctly, the single version is a bit shorter.
When he's playing this song, everything he picks is picked
in a strummy way if you know what I mean. So you don't have
to be a 100% faithful to the tab, if you blend in some other
notes from the chord it really doesn't matter that much.
I tabbed the way he strums the verse and chorus chords but
since it is really hard to tab out when someone is strumming
you must forgive me if it's a bit off.
RIFF 1:
[Dm] [sus4] [Fmaj7] [C]
E|--------3---1-3p1----------0---0-----0---0---| B|------3-----------3--------1---------1-------| G|----2---------------2----2-----------0-------| D|--0--------------------3-----------2---------| A|---------------------------------3-----------| E|---------------------------------------------|
INTRO:
------
Play RIFF 1 three times,
then play this variation once:
[Dm] [sus4] [Fmaj7] [C]
E|--------3---1-3p1----------0---0-------------| B|------3-----------3--------1-----------------| G|----2---------------2----2-------------------| D|--0--------------------3-----------2---------| A|---------------------------------3----3p0-3--| E|---------------------------------------------|
[The chords in the verses and choruses
are played something like this:]
[Dm] [Fmaj7] [C] [Dm]
E|------1----1-x---0----0-----0----0-1---1-3p1---1---| B|------3----3-x---1----1-----1----1-3---3-3-----3---| G|------2----2-x---2----2-----0----0-2---2-2-----2---| D|--0-0----------3-----------------------------0-----| A|------------------------3-3------------------------| E|---------------------------------------------------|
It's kind of hard to tab out the timing but you get the idea.
VERSE 1:
--------
[Dm] We've all seen a [Fmaj7]man at the liquor [C]store beggin' for your [Dm]change
[Dm] The hair on his [Fmaj7]face is dirty, dread-[C]locked, and full of [Dm]mange
[Dm] He asks a [Fmaj7]man for what he could [C]spare, with shame in his [Dm]eyes
[Dm] "Get a [Fmaj7]job you fucking [C]slob," is all he re[Dm]plies
[Dm] God for[Fmaj7]bid you ever had to [C]walk a mile in his [Dm]shoes
[Dm] 'Cause then you really [Fmaj7]might know what it's [C]like to sing the [Dm]blues
CHORUS:
-------
[Dm] Then you really [Fmaj7]might know what it's [C]like...[Dm]
[Dm] Then you really [Fmaj7]might know what it's [C]like...[Dm]
[Dm] Then you really [Fmaj7]might know what it's [C]like...[Dm]
Dm Fmaj7 C [strum last C cbord]
Then you really might know what it's like...
Then you play this: [I think he doesn't play this in the
version that's on the single, but he does in the version
I have]
Dm E* Dm E*

VERSE 2: [play like verse 1]
--------
Mary got pregnant from a kid named Tom
that said he was in love
He said, "Don't worry about a thing, baby doll
I'm the man you've been dreaming of."
But 3 months later he say he won't date her or return her calls
And she swear, "God damn, if I find that man
I'm cuttin' off his balls."
And then she heads for the clinic and
she gets some static walking through the door
They call her a killer, and they call her a sinner
and they call her a whore
God forbid you ever had to walk a mile in her shoes
'Cause then you really might know what it's like to have to choose
CHORUS: [play like previous cborus]
-------
Then you really might know what it's like...
Then you really might know what it's like...
Then you really might know what it's like...
Then you really might know what it's like...
BRIDGE: [play RIFF 1]
-------
[Dm] I've seen a rich man beg
I've seen a good man [Fmaj7]sin
I've seen a tough man [C]cry
[Dm] I've seen a loser win
And a sad man [Fmaj7]grin
I heard an honest man [C]lie
[Dm] I've seen the good side of bad
And the downside of [Fmaj7]up
And everything be[C]tween
[Dm] I licked the silver spoon
Drank from the golden [Fmaj7]cup
And smoked the finest [C]green
[Dm] I stroked the fattest dimes
at least a couple of [Fmaj7]times
Before I broke their [C]heart
[Dm] You know where it ends,
yo, it usually de[Fmaj7]pends
on where you [C]start
[wben you've played tbe bridge you play tbis:]

VERSE 3: [play like verses 1 & 2]
--------
I knew this kid named Max
who used to get fat stacks out on the corner with drugs
He liked to hang out late
he liked to get shit-faced and keep the pace with thugs
until late one night there was a big old fight and Max lost his head
He pulled out his chrome .45, talked some shit, and wound up dead
Now his wife and his kids are caught in the midst of all of this pain
You know it comes that way
At least that's what they say when you play the game
God forbid you ever had to wake up to hear the news
'Cause then you really might know what it's like to have to lose
CHORUS:
-------
[Dm] Then you really [Fmaj7]might know what it's [C]like...[Dm]
[Dm] Then you really [Fmaj7]might know what it's [C]like...[Dm]
[Dm] Then you really [Fmaj7]might know what it's [C]like...
Dm <- the OUTRO starts on this chord
to have to lose
OUTRO:
------
I don't have the song with me but the outro
goes something like this:
[Dm] [Fmaj7]
E|-----1-----1-----1----------0-----0-----0------ B|-------3-----3-----3----------1-----1-----1---- G|---2-----2-----2-----2----2-----2-----2-----2-- D|-0----------------------3---------------------- A|----------------------------------------------- E|-----------------------------------------------

Repeat the outro and fade out...
