Extraordinary Love By Jeff Gilpin

January 8th, 2008

Intro

[Dm] [Am]

Verse 1

I’m [Dm]pretty ordinary

I have [Am]ordinary dreams

Live an [C]ordinary life

At [G]least that’s how it seems

On some [Am]ordinary land

Work an [C]ordinary job

[Am]Doing what I can

[G]But you give me [Am]

Extraordinary [Dm]love [Am]

Verse 2

I make an [Dm]ordinary living

In an [Am]ordinary town

[C]Not too much to do here

There’s [G]not much going down

I drive my [G]ordinary car

Through [Am]ordinary streets

I [C]wave to all the ordinary

[Am]People who I meet

[G]But you give [Am]me

Extraordinary [Dm]love

Ex[G]traordinary love

To this [Dm]ordinary life

[G]More than I could hope for

To [Dm]have you as my wife

[G]Thanks for giving ordinary [Am]me

Extraordinary [Dm]love

I grew [Dm]up ordinary

[Am]Nothing wrong with that

Had an [C]ordinary dog

Went [C]off to make my fortune

An [Am]ordinary fool

And [G]yet you gave me [Am]

Extraordinary [Dm]love [Am]

Verse 4

[Dm]How I ever found you

Was an [Am]ordinary fluke

I [C]think you found me interesting

I was a [G]little hard to spook

I [Am]wanted to know you more

So [C]far from ordinary

The [Am]one I now adore

And [G]now you give me [Am]

Extraordinary [Dm]love

Ex[G]traordinary love

To this [Dm]ordinary life

[G]More than I could hope for

To [Dm]have you as my wife

[G]Thanks for giving ordinary [Am]me

Thanks Lena and Roger . I thought it was a good song idea too and it was really laid out there for me in the fortune. I just needed to turn it into a song.

In October, some of you may remember that my family and I went to Japan. One of the places we visited was the Asakusa Shrine(http://www.japan-guide.com/e/e3004.html). One of the tourist type things people do there is buy these little fortunes which I bought and ended up getting what was called a regular fortune. If you get a bad one you can tie it to a tree and the fortune goes away but if you get a good one then you keep it. Regular ones I guess you can give it back too but I kept mine because my life has been regular and fortunate with no big windfalls or tragedies just a regular life that I’m happy to say suits me just fine. Sorry to make it so long but it was a story so I had to finish it. Hope you all like it.

Number 47 – A Regular Fortune By Jeff Gilpin

January 7th, 2008

Intro

[Em]

Verse 1

[Amaj7]In an ancient temple

[Cmaj7]Visiting an ancient land

[Amaj7]I purchased my fortune

[Cmaj7]From this ancient stand

[D]Number 47

[Amaj7]Regular Fortune it said

I [Cmaj7]Didn’t understand it

In English on the back I [A]read

It said your [D]fortune is not special

It’s [A]plain and ordinary

But [D]just because it’s plain

Doesn’t mean it’s [Em]scary[Amaj7]

Verse 2

[Amaj7]Though you may want it now

Like [Cmaj7]waiting for a holiday

[Amaj7]Wait try and be patient

It will [Cmaj7]come with a slight delay

Like [D]hiking through the mountains

[Amaj7]It takes work and time

But the [Cmaj7]journey and destination

Makes it well worth the [A]climb

Your [D]fortune is not special

There [A]are no short cuts here

[D]Hard work, patience

And good people to help [Em]steer [Amaj7]

Verse 3

The [Amaj7]request you most desire

Will be [Cmaj7]recovered later on

Like the [Amaj7]moral of a fairy tale

The final [Cmaj7]chorus of a song

[D]You’ll find what you have lost

And [Amaj7]you will find it soon

It’s [Cmaj7]where you last remember

Tucked away in your [A]room

Your [D]fortune is not special

Neither [A]is it one to dread

Your life [D]will be long and happy

Smoothing sailing [Em]ahead [Amaj7]

Verse 4

A [Amaj7]new home might be worthwhile

Or [Cmaj7]tear an old one down

It’s [Amaj7]good to take a trip

[Cmaj7]To some far off town

Don’t [D]worry about your marriage

Or your [Amaj7]place of employment

[Cmaj7]Better to live your life

Savor every mo[A]ment

Your [D]fortune is not special

Not [A]special is still just fine

No [D]worries for tomorrow

Enjoy this gift of [Em]time [Amaj7]

So I [D]thought about my fortune

The [A]one I had just read

It [D]made me stop and wonder

Then had to [Em]catch up with my family up on a[Amaj7]head

Hey Reb -I was playing around with this but all I could get so far was this

[Em]I found a [Am]man with his head in his [Em]hands
Who wore a dead [Am]heart on his [C]sleeve [D]

What do you think?

Thanks for all the comments.

Hey Reb - For the FMaj7 try this: xx3210.  I suck at the barred F chord (well I suck at most barred chords for that matter) so I use this cheater method. It has a similiar sound and is too difficult for me to play (easy transition from a C) so feel free to use it if you like. It works for most songs with an F and has a quite pleasent sound I think.

Hey Paul - I need to get up to speed on the whole video side of computers. I will give it a go sometime but recording takes an awful long time as it is. I'll switch to video some day I guess but not any time soon.

I sometimes have a problem with thinking one thing and when I go to say what I’m thinking I mess it up. This song is about that and how doing things will get your point across as good or better than saying them in the long run.

Actions Don’t Lie By Jeff Gilpin

January 4th, 2008

Verse 1

A [C]slip of the tongue

A [G]simple mistake

The [FMaj7]best of intentions

Are [C]hard to unmake [G]

Verse 2

[C]A pilot error

To the [G]lips from the head

Can [FMaj7]mix up the meaning

Make you [C]wish you were dead [G]

[FMaj7]Words may fall short

But [C]actions won’t lie

What[G]ever the reasons

Or [C]how hard you try [C7]

[FMaj7]Words don’t always convince

[C]Maybe you shouldn’t even [FMaj7]try

[C]Just remember [G]

Action don’t [FMaj7]lie[C]

Verse 3

[C]Some are quite gifted

With an [G]eloquent tongue

While [FMaj7]others are better

At [C]getting things done [G]

Verse 4

So [C]if words escape you

At the [G]end of the day

[FMaj7]Convey your message

In a [C]more active way[G]

[FMaj7]Words may fall short

But [C]actions won’t lie

What[G]ever the reasons

Or [C]how hard you try [C7]

[FMaj7]Words don’t always convince

[C]Maybe you shouldn’t even [FMaj7]try

[C]Just remember [G]

Action don’t [FMaj7]lie[C]

Verse 5

[C]Saying I’m sorry

[G]Saying you care

Is [FMaj7]not quite the same

As [C]just being there [G]

Verse 6

Do [C]someone a favor

[G]Fix what’s not right

They’ll [FMaj7]eventually get it

And [C]may see the light [G]

[FMaj7]Words may fall short

But [C]actions won’t lie

What[G]ever the reasons

Or [C]how hard you try [C7]

[FMaj7]Words don’t always convince

[C]Maybe you shouldn’t even [FMaj7]try

[C]Just remember [G]

Action don’t [FMaj7]lie[C]

Writers who inspire me are ones who can write a song that I can see in my head when I play. One favorite of mine if Jackson Browne; his songs For a Dancer, Looking into You and Fountain of Sorrow, all three I can see in my head when I listen. I still get misty eyed listening to the words "...'Cause I know that you'd  rather we were dancing"

Hey Reb - Great topic and sounds great too. I had trouble playing this without smiling.

Thanks James and Toney - On the first and third line I go from a C to a C7 but I thought it might be a little too busy to include for the forum. It does give the song a nicer sound I think if you want to give it a try.

Toney - the C7/Fmaj7 along with Dm7/Am7 chord mix sounded good to me and the words seemed to fit

This is just a little song about the woman whose eyes to this day still leave me speechless. I hope you all like it.

Those Eyes By Jeff Gilpin

January 2nd, 2008

Intro

[Dm7]

Verse 1

What [C]she means to me isn’t easy to see

Except when I look in her [FMaj7]eyes [Fadd9] [FMaj7]

Oh [C]I may complain when she drives me insane

But just one look from those [FMaj7]eyes [Fadd9] [FMaj7]

And I’m [Dm7]lost

I’m out of [Am7]control

[Dm7]Lost

To the depths of my [Am7]soul

Oh the [Dm7]cost

I would pay a kings [Am7]ransom

To be [Bb]lost forever

In [B]the [C]seas of those [Dm7]eyes

Verse 2

[C]Don’t get me wrong our life’s not a song

We still have our ups and our [FMaj7]downs [Fadd9] [FMaj7]

[C]Yet I can say that at least for today

I’ve managed to keep her [FMaj7]around [Fadd9] [FMaj7]

[Dm7]Together

We survive it [Am7]all

[Dm7]With her

My life is not [Am7]small

[Dm7]With me

She has but to [Am7]ask

With [Bb]one look

From [B]the [C]depths of those [Dm7]eyes

Verse 3

[C]The years have gone by and yet I still try

To steal every glance I can [FMaj7]get [Fadd9] [FMaj7]

I [C]know she’s aware though I can’t help but stare

At those eyes I will never [FMaj7]forget[Fadd9] [FMaj7]

She [Dm7]smiles

When she catches my [Am7]eyes

She [Dm7]laughs

It’s no big sur[Am7]prise

And she’s [Dm7]got me

Through the end of my [Am7]days

I see she [Bb]knows

In the [B]love I [C]see in her [Dm7]eyes

This is just a song about change and how it seems needed changes get lost or overlooked sometimes due to petty politics. I just wish there were more folks in power throughout the world who would try to make the world a better place. Maybe one day they can succeed. Anyway I hope you all like the song.

Tomorrow By Jeff Gilpin

January 1st, 2008

Intro

[C] [F7] [C] [G]

Verse 1

[C]Mmm… Some people [F7]say

[C]Don’t worry so much about to[F7]day

[C]Not much you can do any [F7]way

Just keep [G]going and look the other [F7]way

And worry about [C]tomorrow[F7] [C] [G]

Verse 2

[C]Mmm…I don’t [F7]know

[C]Maybe worry isn’t the right [F7]word

[C]It’s better to say I get dis[F7]turbed

But keep [G]it in so it goes un[F7]heard

Might get fixed [C]tomorrow[F7] [C] [G]

By those i[F7]maginary people

The [C]ones who right the wrongs

The [F7]ones who fight the good fight

While [C]we the working throngs

[Em]Suppress our worries about [F7]today [G] [F7]

And worry about [C]tomorrow [F7] [C] [G]

Verse 3

[C]Mmm…I wonder [F7]why

[C]Some folks go into [F7]politics

[C]The ones who get things [F7]fixed

And the [G]ones stirring the [F7]mix

For a better [C]tomorrow[F7] [C] [G]

Verse 4

[C]Mmm… Most of [F7]us

[C]Too busy trying to make ends [F7]meet

[C]No time to hang with the social [F7]elite

No af[G]fairs so dis[F7]crete

Just trying to make it ‘til [C]tomorrow[F7] [C] [G]

Not the [F7]privileged few

With the [C]time or inclination

Who’ve [F7]never had to worry

About their [C]children’s education

No [Em]worries to speak of [F7]today[G] [F7]

Or for that matter [C]tomorrow[F7] [C] [G]

Verse 5

[C]Mmm…What can be [F7]done

[C]To somehow let it be [F7]known

[C]The worries the rest of us [F7]own

When [G]they won’t pick up the [F7]phone

For a better [C]tomorrow[F7] [C] [G]

Verse 6

[C]Mmm… Over [F7]time

[C]If we keep telling those we [F7]trust

[C]And if the banks don’t all go [F7]bust

One day they’ll [G]listen, surely they [F7]must

In time to fix [C]tomorrow[F7] [C] [G]

I [F7]hope there will be time

And that our [C]future can be repaired

Set a[F7]side our petty bickering

And let a [C]truce be declared

[Em]We can let that be the [F7]day [G] [F7]

We ensure we have [C]tomorrows[F7] [G] [C]

Yeah, this one is kind of twangy the way I play and sing it. I'm sorry you've never had the chance to get over here Roger. I bet you'd like it in the states. I will try and record it sometime but my list is getting rather long.

She really liked it and seemed very pleased. She really is holding up well too.

Hey James - I've really been thinking about using harmony in most of my songs, at hleast the new ones. It really worked out well in Grey Skies and Ayase Lullaby so I'm kind of assuming it's going to be in them all. Thanks

Growing up in the western part of North Carolina, my family would often take trips to Georgia for one reason or another and I developed a fondness for that great state. So here is that fondness expressed in this song and I hope you all like it and get a chance to visit as well.

Down to Georgia By Jeff Gilpin

December 30th, 2007

Intro

[E]

Verse 1

[E]I like the state I live in

[E]Yes indeed I do

But I’m [E]going down to Georgia

To see just [E7]what it is they do

Down in [G]Georgia

[A]It’s where I’m going [E]to

Verse 2

That [E]got that country living

And [E]city life as well

Not [E]sure which one’s better

It’s a [E7]little hard to tell

Down in [G]Georgia

[A]Where they live real [E]well

From the [G]Chattahoochee River

To [E]Savannah on the coast

Where [A]good people at good places

[B7]Have a right to boast

Down in [E]Georgia

Verse 3

The [E]city of Atlanta I heard

Was [E]burned back in the day

Now [E]some folks come to visit

While [E7]others like to stay

Down in [G]Georgia

[A]I’ll be heading that [E]way

Verse 4

Now in [E]Columbus and Augusta

Live many [E]military families

Brave [E]men and women strong and proud

Pro[E7]tecting the lives we lead

Down in [G]Georgia

[A]Where they’re proud and they're [E]free

From the [G]Chattahoochee River

To [E]Savannah on the coast

Where [A]good people at good places

[B7]Have a right to boast

Down in [E]Georgia

Verse 5

[E]In their mountain foothills

Starts the [E]Appalachian Trail

Where [E]people come and hike to Maine

[E7]If their feet don’t fail

Down in [G]Georgia

[A]Where they start of that fabled [E]trail

Verse 6

[E]Well it has been a while

But I can [E]find my way around

I can [E]navigate to Peachtree Street

And At[E7]lanta’s underground

Down in [G]Georgia

[A]Going to see what’s going [E]down

From the [G]Chattahoochee River

To [E]Savannah on the coast

Where [A]good people at good places

[B7]Have a right to boast

Down in [E]Georgia

29 and holding By Jeff Gilpin

December 27th, 2007

Dedicated to you know who

Verse 1

[G]Your eye’s still got that [D]twinkle

You [C]got that childlike [D]grin

You [G]worry that you’re [D]older

[C]Save them for [D]when

You [Em]really start to [D]feel it

Feel [C]like you’re old and [D]molding

Because right [G]now

You’re [C]29 and [D]holding

Verse 2

You say [G]quit I know you’re [D]kidding

[C]Quit playing a[D]round

But[G] I can tell you [D]truthful

No [C]other girl in [D]town

Has [Em]held onto her [D]beauty

[C]It’s never been [D]stolen

[G]Baby

You’re [C]29 and [D]holding

Bridge

You’re [C]filled with youthful energy

You [D]have a baby’s [Em]breath

You’ll [C]never forget

Or at [C]least haven’t yet

How to [D]play a youthful [D7]jest

Verse 3

[G]So here’s another [D]birthday

No [C]different than the [D]rest

[G]All the usual [D]suspects

Like the [C]cake you love [D]best

[Em]Take all these [D]offerings

And [C]let your day be [D]golden

And keep [G]staying

[C]29 and [G]holding [D] [G]

First of all, this is purely fictitious. My baby treats me good, but that would never make a good bluesy Christmas song so I what if’ed she didn’t treat me so good and came up with this. Hope you all like it.

Please Santa Claus By Jeff Gilpin

December 23rd, 2007

Intro

[A] [D] [A] [E7]

Please Santa [A]Claus

You know I been [B7]good

So [D]why don’t she treat me [E7]

Like you know that she [A]should [E7]

And Santa [A]Claus

Why I’m singing this [B7]song

Is that [D]she always thinking [E7]

That I’m doing her [A]wrong [E7] [A7]

Well I’m [D]devoted

I [A]tell you that I worship that [A7]girl

But I [D]think she must be blind

The things I [B7]do out of goodness

She thinks I’m [E7]being unkind

Hey Santa [A]Claus

Please help her to [B7]see

I’ve [D]got no disguises [E7]

She shouldn’t worry about [A]me [E7]

Santa [A]Clause

I know you see [B7]all

So [D]please tell my woman [E7]

Can you give her a [A]call [E7] [A7]

You see [D]she…

She [A]gets so angry and [A7]mad

You see [D]she expects the worst

She thinks I [B7]must be doing wrong

Oh Santa [E7]please call her first

Hey Santa [A]Claus

I know I’ve been bad be[B7]fore

But [D]that’s in the past [E7]

I don’t stray [A]anymore [E7]

Please Santa [A]Claus

This Christmas [B7]please

Let [D]my woman know [E7]

She shouldn’t worry about [D]me [E7] [A7]

Well, Billy Joel's song is a bit darker than mine I must say. I've kind of focused on the solders' reasons for being over there and their side of this war without dwelling on the political reasons why the solders are there. I think I might have treaded a darker path if I had mixed the whole political side into the song. I really worry about our kids who are over there and who take the monetary reenlistment incentives that are being offered and end up serving multiple tours in a place that is not very safe. It's kind of like a high stake gamble.

Hey Lena - Actually I have heard the story behind this song and there was a movie made about it called "Joyeux Noël" back in 2005 that I saw and did a pretty good job capturing the moment (thanks to Netflix for letting me find it). Being a bit of a crazed football fan I often search out movies with football and I guess both the Carol and later a football match happend during this battle in the war.  I recommend this if you ever get the chance to see it. It is a good story for people who like to think about the human side of war, like me. I would love to hear you sing this if you would like to post it on your site I would be forever in your debt (no pressure though as I think I owe you a song or twenty myself). Thanks and have a Merry Christmas.

Hey Dino - Thanks. Yep, my son went back over for his second tour back in November. He is a lot busier this time around so I'm hoping it will make the time go a little faster for him. It's still going to creep along for me I'm sure. I hope you and your's have a great Christmas.

Christmas in the Desert By Jeff Gilpin

December 22nd, 2007

[G]Christmas in the [D]Desert

[Em]No white Christmas far from [C]home

Just [G]solders keeping [D]company

[C]Wondering how they’ve [D]come to [G]roam [D]

[G]Seems just the [D]other day

[Em]They were working that 9 to [C]5

[G]Weren’t making much of a [D]living

[C]But e[D]nough to [G]survive [D]

[Em]You see they're going to do their [C]own thing

And they're [D]going to try and make it on their [Em]own

They [Em]signed up for a just [C]few years

Where they’ll be [D]learning away from home

Now they're [G]working and [D]waiting

[Em]Helping this land that’s in [C]need

[G]Trying to prop their people [D]up

[C]Trying to [D]help them to [G]succeed [D]

[G]They'll be keeping [D]track of

The [Em]time as it goes [C]by

As [G]they learn their occu[D]pation

So that [C]one day they [D]give it a [G]try [D]

Because they're [Em]going to do their [C]own thing

[D]They're going to make it on their [Em]own

They [Em]only have a [C]few years left

Then [D]they’ll be heading back home

I [G]hope that they’ll be [D]ready

[Em]When that time comes a[C]round

To [G]jump in and get [D]going

Making [C]real money back in [D]their home [G]town [D]

But if [G]they don’t think they're [D]ready

There’s [Em]always signing away a few [C]more

They [G]have time till that de[D]cision

So [C]who knows [D]what's in [G]store [D]

[Em]They can go do their [C]own thing

[D]They can try to make it on their [Em]own

Or [Em]they can decide in a [C]few years

When [D]they'll be heading back home

[G]But today it’s [D]Christmas

In the [Em]land where duty [C]calls

And the [G]solders are cele[D]brating

So Merry [C]Christmas to [D]one and [C]all [D] [G]

Hey Ken - I played it Blues in E (E, E7, A, B7...that sort of thing) and it seemed to work out. I have to admit I can't get my own voice around scotish slang (if you can imagine a cross between scot slang and american country...well thats what came out...not a good combination. It sure is a nice down on your luck and don't care story song. smile

Just a little introspective thinking that kind of ties in with what I've been doing: planning my goals for the next year, self assessment performance reviews for the past year, and song writing that never seems to stop no matter what time of year. I hope you all like it.

Hey you Guys - Thanks - I feel the same. Sometimes I want to play sad music because I'm sad other times I want to play it because I'm happy and just like the tune....Bell Bottom Blues is a great example of both...Working Class Hero is another song I like to play no matter what mood I'm in. Now Emotional Music is not a sad song but I kind of play it like a bluegrass tune and a little upbeat. Yep, Roger, it's a good finger picking song too and it makes me wish I could play the banjo.  smile
