I have a couple of bouzoukis. It is possible to tune them on a par with four guitar strings and it works well- (although in reality the Greek bouzouki is tuned three tones lower on each string) and the longer fingerboard is easier for guitarists to adapt to. As a guitarist, I found it relatively straightforward and was able to create something close to a tune almost immediately. Larger and more interesting than a mandolin, it is probably a more useful choice for guitarists.
