Never seen or played one. What's the tuning ?

Hi Phil,

Really like this one - very atmospheric.

Reminds me of a print I had from way back in the '70's. It was called "The Sentinel" - showed a lone horseman on a misty background.

Jacques Brel is my francophone hero.

Here's Bowie ( although I prefer Scott Walker's version).

And here is the original - wasn't he Belgian, G-Doc ?

I certainly agree. Most of the Arts were at a different state of development compared to today. There were no novels ( Cervantes wouldn't be born for another forty years), plays were limited to church miracle plays, and if you had played a flatted 7th you'ld have been chucked out of lute school.

At least you could tell what a painter was getting at.

Clearly one of the Mourne Hill farmers left the heat on overnight, Lena. It was baltic in Belfast!

Sorry, we were discussing the credit crunch, unemployment and global finance. ( Will try and make it next year ; )

Hope you had a nice meal and that the jam session was a bit of craic.

When you can play it this well, she won't hate it ( mind you it's not a tenor uke he's playing |!)

Yes, butterflies and wheels come to mind. You get the idea that some peace would do her some good.

And, with addictive personalities, sometimes some of their addiction leaches out to us.

"hi alan, i never thought of fairies as malevolent"

Guess I'm thinking about Irish Fairies - the little people. A bit like yer elf woman in Lord of the rings when she puts the ring on.

Thanks for the comments everyone.

You're right on the chord changes, Daddy !

I'm having to shift all my songs onto a different MySpace site and probably change my moniker here on Chordie - for professional reasons - keeping work and home separate ! The songs will be down for a bit, but the new site is already set up. I'll let everyone know when it's done.

Great song Selso.

Loved the phrase

"And they say that time is gonna heal
How ya gonna tell, girl, if your not here?"

Uke really isn't that different from guitar. Yes, you throw different chord shapes, but you are still flexing your fingers. With practice you should be able to play both well - unless you want to be Joe Pass ( showing my age) or whatsisname Shimabura.

This is my first song from a riff, rather than the words. I'll post a recording when I can. Took a lot less time - maybe that's a bad thing !

Agree about the arpeggios. Your photo and title kind of made me think of water too. There's a castle in Antrim called Shane's Castle. It sits looking over Lough Neagh.

What came to mind was the many tales of ghosts walking the tunnels that connect the buildings and lead up to the terrace over the lough.

I don't mean the Banshee of course ! See http://www.antrim.gov.uk/index.cfm?webs … ge_Key=479

We'd call the musical thing "noodling". We don't really have a second meaning for the "w" word.

Two sides of the pond separated by a common language !

Also the more pick area there is for your thumb and finger to hold on to - the more the pick will stay in place, so you can also try a slightly bigger pick.

It's all up to personal preference, I don't like thin picks and I don't like the idea of the sandpaper ( or whatever ). You can play lightly with any pick, it just comes with practice. I like to be able to vary the 'weight" of my sound throughout a song, so a heavier pick works for me.

If you have a chromatic tuner you should be able to tune it. Most of the clip-ons will work. I'm deaf, so I depend on my tuner.

It sound's like you may just need to replace the strings. Doing that can be difficult, depending on the style of your mandolin's tailpiece. I have an old mando-banjo that is nearly impossible to string with the d and g string.

And when you do get it strung, don't just stick with the chords. Your guitar playing will benefit most from playing melody. The mandolin forces you to use your pinky till it hurts. The mandolin tuning is also much easier to play melody on than the guitar because of the tuning system.

Great images and atmosphere, Phill. Who was she ?

There can be a real sense of a presence in some of our broad leaf glades. There are places where you really feel there has never been any change in the world. As a kid, there was one place we called "the silent" which was dark, but warm, and there were times, when the wind blew and the leaves swept in waves, that you strained to hear a voice. For me, the legends of fairies always included a threat that the creature would turn malevolent.

I used to be registered on Pandora - it was a great system for hearing new music.  Then I got knocked off the system because of some licensing dispute.

Most of the stuff I was getting through was bluegrass, newgrass and altcountry stuff. I'll maybe try spotify and see if they include anything more than indie pop.
