For Christmas, my wife got me 2 hrs at a local recording studio (with engineer)!

wrote this one fairly quickly about a week ago - and put down some quick demo tracks over the weekend.  I had trouble finding the "song" so to speak, the demos didn't seem right...so Sunday morning this version just came out - and I recorded it quickly with garageband.  I added two overdubs; acoustic and the heavy electric to add some edge.

for those who don't have the time to surf, lyrics and chords below:

care for nothing
Capo 2

Am                        C
I was born in a town small and narrow.
Am                           C
Main street was torn down and new.
Am                 C        G
The high school headed in, and the hotel headed out,
Am         C                   G
and most…were just getting through.
    F         G        Am

Snow was deep it was just past Christmas.

The halo was still hanging out with the moon.

Mama brought me home, to that old house up the road,

one less man hanging round that room.

Mama moved away to the city,

with her tow-headed boy on a bus.

Where that man went, she could never say.

And he never came back around for us,

No he never came back for us.

I’m grown up now down in Toronto,

got a tow-headed boy of my own.

I was There when he was Given, from his Mother in July,

I’m the only father he’ll ever know.

    Long time ago I decided,

not to let the sins of someone gone to fall,

down at my feet, and make me stumble,

and keep caring for nothing at all.

You can’t care for someone so small.

This is a great site, great members and lots of real advice and little attitude.

I've got one as well. I upgraded the pick ups to Gibson 490/498 and it sounds great.  And a really great player to boot.  For the money...a lot of guitar.

I've never seen a sunburst Martin before - that is one prized piece.

Congrats.

And I keep your room
    Lit bright

This line reminded me of the sentiment in "Downbound Train"

Nice.

Love 'em.  The best thing to roll out of Akron Ohio since Goodyear.

Thanks for the listen Bob.  I wrote the song pretty quickly so it ended up being a little shorter than my liking.  I've thought up a few more verses but I am finding it difficult to reconcile them with the originals.

Comments and criticisms welcome.

Boots around my neck

G
Well I woke up once again
           D
Passed out God only knows when
       C                               G
With too many lights bouncing round my head.

My jeans were on the floor
And a woman at the door
Whose name despite my best I can’t recollect

The night came quick before
And she stayed for just one more
And here I am with my boots tied round my neck

All I need is one good woman
Who can set me straight to shootin
And see right through me when I get to lyin

But no doubt I’ll fall behind
Cause I’m of a lonely mind
And I’ll wake up with my boots tied round my neck.

Something a bit more modern - but you can make it your own pretty easily - "Dead Leaves on the Dirty Ground" The White Stripes

STEEL CURTAIN!!!

"When I die I don't want no part of Heaven. I would not do Heaven's work well.  I pray the devil comes to take me to stand beside the fiery furnaces of Hell."  Youngstown, Bruce Springsteen (for all those members in the steel belt)

Epi Dot.  Guaranteed.  I swapped out the pups for genuine Gibson burstbuckers and it does sweet and mellow to rock and roll.  Great bargain for a great all around guitar.

Posted a new song on myspace:  http://www.myspace.com/nof7

It's called Darling Road - the recording is rough - it was the first time all the guys in the band ran through - and for some even heard it - and with all the instruments I was competing for volume with my vocals - we recorded it at a late 19th century one room schoolhouse outside of London, Ontario.  Hope you enjoy...

Chord progression is Em G D Am with the bridge D Am D Am C then back to the verse progression.

A shot rolled over the hill down Darling Road last night
The dogs took up their chorus and a second shot stopped the night.
Headlamps lit the gravel, making searchlights in the trees.
When that Chevy hit the dam we knew it was Jimmy Deeds.

See Jimmy got hard into the rye that morning before 10am.
When Carol didn't come home he knew it wasn't just him.
He called her on the cell and Joey picked up the phone.
He yelled "Yer gonna die this time boy so you best just drive her home.

Bridge:

Past the dam the water is shallow, but the mud is deep.
Folks have lost their secrets down there and
Drowned thoughts they shouldn't keep.

Jimmy knew Joey from back in the day.
They knew from three they'd fish these sloughs til their hair turned gray.
Carol always played both sides but settled for Jim when Joe went away.

I'll stay with you she said the day they made good.
But Jimmy knew it would take more than a few words and his only suit.
When Joey came back she whispered "Nothing can stop us".
Nothing but a 12 gauge shell and the dam on Darling Road.

Bridge:

By the time Joey pulled out, a warm night had fell.
And when Joey pulled in, Jimmy's bottle was down.
But his Browning had its pin behind two shells.

Your comments are welcome: and don't worry "you have to be cruel to be kind."

and a photog to boot! I share your passions.  Nice stuff.

Pete, start saving, but promise yourself to not buy the Gibson until your Martin looks lived in...like you've put some miles under the wheels.

Thanks Amy!  I don't sing on all of the tracks - the two other guys I play with take over the vocals on Dead Flowers and Hasn't Hit Me.

Here you go, same chord progression throughout

G            D                        Am       C
there's three lanes headin on the west side

G          D           Am
two lanes headed to the east

G                D              Am     C
that's one more lane to bring my baby back

G         D                   C
bring my baby home to me

got an '83 Chevrolet

got no heater on the dash

come december it frosts up
some
but it won't keep me from going back

bringing my baby back

bringing my baby home to me

bringing my baby back

bringing my baby home to me

the 401 goes a long way down

from the Valley to Detroit

my tires hum and they burn along

a broken grille keeps me dead to rights

she left when I wouldn't put my name

to the one that grew inside

now I see my own eyes staring back at me

and it's time to turn the tide

bringing my baby back

bringing my little boy home to me

bringing my baby back

bringing my brown-eyed boy home to me

WOW - people have really been creative around here lately judging by the number of recent songs posted...that's awesome.

Here's one of mine I recorded and put up on myspace - I wrote it some time ago and finally put down a version I liked.

I like it - good song.  Got a bit of Robyn Hitchcock vibe to it!  Well done, nice and catchy with a good chorus!

That's a nice little amp...what are you running through it? Guitar wise that is?
