Topic: Goodbye Billy Walker (NOW RECORDED)

This a song I wrote just recently but will have it recorded in a couple of weeks for sure,no doubt about it. Being stuck with Mondo Writers Block, I was coming up blanks so I thought I would try and write something that would be a song-track in a movie.(this would give me more material to follow the movie line and help out the writers block) Long story short. This is a story about two life long friends in the old west. One dies for reasons that have not been written about yet. The other bury's him, in a rainy valley far from home and is reminiscing and saying his goodbyes.
Done in a John Prine style
Enjoy

Capo 4th fret

Goodbye Billy Walkerby Ken Peters Aug 07/09

[G]Hmmm[G]Hmmm [G]Hmmm

[G]So long Billy Walker, I'm proud to be your friend.

[C]You never took to trouble but it [G]took you in the end.

[C]The gunning and the running from the [Bm]dark side of the law,

[D]Plain took us both so [C]far away from [G]home.

[G]I dug real deep Bill Walker, so your bones could not be found,

[C]And scattered through the valley on this [G]cold and lonely ground.

[C]Your pictures of sweet Becky lye for[Bm]ever by your side,

[D]With letters that your Momma wrote you [C]when your Poppa [G]died.

[C]Go now Billy Walker to the [G]righteousness of God.

Sleep [D]well my friend, your [C]life was not in [G]vain.

[Em]We grew up [C]poor in West Vir[G]ginia.

[Em]We hunted [C]black bears in the [G]hills of Tenne[D]ssee.

[Em]We both sought [C]Beckys sweet a[G]ffection.

And when you [D]won that fight,

I cried [C]all that night.

M-M-[G]M-M

[G]Can you hear me Billy Walker, can you hear me when I say.

I'll [C]tell sweet Becky and your Momma [G]how you died this day.

I'll [C]tell em how you loved them, how you [Bm]hoped to see them soon,

And [D]how the cards just never played out [C]in that old sa[G]loon.

[C]I'd gladly take your place my friend, I'd [G]gladly do your time.

[D]Billy I ain't [C]got no one back [G]home.

[Em]We rode the [C]trails way down in [G]Georgia.

[Em]We drove them [C]longhorns to a [G]town called New Or[D]leans.

[Em]We played some [C]cards in TexAr[G]kana.

With a [D]one armed man.

And his [C]cheatin hand.

M-M-[G]M-M

[G]Finally Billy Walker, I'll be California bound.

[C]They say life ain't worth living when old [G]memories hold you down.

I'm [C]tired of riding shotgun and my [Bm]soul cries heavy tears.

I [D]need a home to hang my hat and [C]live out all my [G]years..

[C]Goodbye Billy Walker, God [G]carry you today.

Past [D]heavens gate to [C]wide open [G]plains.

Through [D]heavens gate to [C]ride the open [G]range.

[G]Hmmm [G]Hmmm [G]Hmmm

Hi Ken,

It was a struggle to come up with the lyrics on this one(Big Time writers block). Hopefully I can come up with more inspiration from this  to get back into the swing of things.

Thanks for the read and comments and being a John Prine fan.

Thanks daddy for the read and comments. I don't know how many yippy's and yodels can fit in as it's a pretty laid back song but I'll give it some thought.

That's a fine one Kenny...not too difficult to play and the melody is pretty nice. Great job.

Re: Goodbye Billy Walker (NOW RECORDED)

Hi Kenny,

Glad to see you back in the saddle ya auld Knutte [bet that's the wrong spelling, been a long time!]  big_smile

This is a fine example of what your writing hand was made for...a great story line and I bet [knowing you] a top drawer melody line to go with it!  wink

As I've said before, anything I can do...you just have to ask.

love from the boring old Welsh git `tuther side of pond  cool

Ask not what Chordie can do for you, but what you can do for Chordie.

Re: Goodbye Billy Walker (NOW RECORDED)

Thanks Jeff smile

Simple can be all that is needed for a nice song. I'm really biting at the bit to get the finger picking down so I can record it next week. After it is recorded can I get you to add "Recorded" in the subject line to save those that are interested in hearing it from checking back to see if it is done yet.

Thanks for the read and comments. smile

Kenny

Hey Phill my Welsh Friend smile

Feels good to be back, now I just gotta kick myself to stay awhile. lol

I appreciate your kind words as they're coming from a pretty talented singer/songwriter in his own right. I have a week to practice my fingerpicking and trying to remember how to record with Audacity as I don't feel comfortable with my BR600.

Hopefully I won't have to ask too much but if I should...I know where you live. big_smile

Thanks my Friend. smile

Re: Goodbye Billy Walker (NOW RECORDED)

Great recording Ken. John Prine style is right on. You could be an impersonator (and I mean that it with mucho respect)!

I believe only a moderator of the songwriting forum could possibly modify the thread title.

Very Nice Ken,

Please share with us the instruments used and the recording process. I love violin and cello used this way it makes it so professional sounding. Very nice guitar work also.

A great write KAP. For me it immediately evoked scenes of the old wild west. Excellent stuff.

Hi Selso,
It turned out different then anticipated but I'm happy with the end results.
Thanks for the listen big_smile
Kenny

Hi Trevor,

I tried to keep it simple so I couldn't screw it up too much. It's a first for harmonizing.
Thanks Again big_smile
Kenny

Howdy Topdown
If I could only play guitar like John Prine I'd be a happy man.
Appreciate the comments and the listen big_smile
Kenny

Hi wlbaye
Thanks for the listen, the recording was done using Audacity (for some reason it's working now) The guitar was run through my PX5D (Thanks Doc) and the solo violin is off my Yamaha PSR2000 keyboard.
My Cort is capo on the third fret.   212 takes to try and get the guitar.....Phe-e-e-e-e-w.  Close enough. I though I would try out the harmonizing for effect but I think as I listen to it now I should have left it out.
Thanks Again for the comments big_smile
Kenny

Thanks buvvy,
I just recently found out there was a country singer by the same name that met a tragic fate or so I was told. I'll have to check into it.
Appreciate your comments and your listen  big_smile

Hi Roger,
I'm glad you enjoyed the listen, it took awhile to "get er done" I hope I didn't go overboard on the background vocals. Oiy!!!
