Topic: Lessons

Hello everyone

Ive just booked my self in for some guitar lessons and was curious as to wether they are actually worth it or would self teaching be just as good, plus another thing is the price il be paying around £16 (around $9)and was just wondering weather it was cheap. But mainly was just curious as to what every thought of lessons compared to self teaching.

Re: Lessons

After a few lessons you'll have the basics under your belt and will pick up a lot of things yourself anyway. A decent tutor will help you avoid any bad habits or mistakes you will be making along the way though.
I get one lesson every week, £15 for 45 mins one on one teaching which I reckon is decent value (especially since I'm the last pupil of the day and usually wind up getting over an hour!) For me it's been invaluable cos I probably would have chucked it as soon as I came to my first major hurdle...which was the F chord...My tutor showed me a simple cheat too overcome it in the short term and I kept playing on.

I guess it's an individual choice, but I would go with the tutor and still try and pick up as much as I could elsewhere as well.

Re: Lessons

I aggree with moddish taking lessons are the way to go. This keeps you from getting into bad habits that couold cause problems further down the road I pay 17.50 $ Canadian per 1/2 hr lesson and it has been worth every penny!

As long as you can afford it I would take lessons. If money is a problem there are lots of online places such ashttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qYfYE7XX00Y&mode=relate d&search=

Happy practicing

Re: Lessons

Lessons are great. You get advantage from playing with other people anyway. When you're just starting out, the best person to play with is a teacher.

Re: Lessons

Jimmy,

Yes!!! That is a very nice price for lessons. Are they worth it? Really depends on how good a teacher you have and how good a student you are. Honestly nobody is so good that they can't learn from somebody els. I come from a University town (Carbondale Il) and a lot of people around there make a big thing out of who you studied under. Good luck and remember you can never know it all so always welcome the chance to learn from someone!

Re: Lessons

Get some E-Z method chord books. Lessons can benefit you, but self taught is good too. Whatever you think is best for you. If you can sing, start out with song books with chords. Joseph Cormier, maybe you know my little brother J P?

Re: Lessons

hey whiskie ridge,i've seen your bro J.P. perform six or seven times here in the maritimes.very good indeed.he is very talented and can play more than just guitar.well worth to go see him perform if he ever comes to a town near you.he toured with stompin tom conners a few years back which they both put in a great show. ..cheers from the east coast of canada... badeye.

Re: Lessons

Lessons are fantastic, formal or informal, individualized or grouped. Personally, I am a teacher of guitar and also a student of guitar. As my students improve some ask me to teach them songs I may not be able to play. Although parting is ultimately inevitable with most of my students I want to teach them as much as I can. This means as they get better, I gotta get better.

Playing with many different players is also a great tool for learning and improving. Exposure to different styles of music can be beneficial in a big way.

As previous posts have mentioned music is an infinite evolution of progress and no matter how well one plays there is always room for improvement.

Give everything but up.

Re: Lessons

Yes, I believe it was the Chester playhouse where some fan stole Tom's hat right off his head. Funny story told to me by my Brother. Another one was where stompin' Tome went into a fancy hotel, let out a great big fart, and said, "By God, I am the wind!"

Re: Lessons

You are absolutely right on there, Brother. I learn new things every time I play guitar with other players. That's great advice. Joseph Cormier
