Topic: I finally did it!

There can be nothing more embarrassing than a 40 year old man trying out a guitar in a store. Especially when said 40 year old is as bad a guitarist as me.
But I finally overcame my fear of guitar shops and took the plunge. OK so the place was pretty quiet but I did it. This has been a phobia of mine for many years - playing in front of snotty nosed youths who look down their snotty noses at you.
I've been looking for a new guitar in the £200 range. Not a lot when it come to guitars. Played a Deacon (naff) and a Tanglewood (bit better) but still never found anything that jumped out at me.
Now I've stared my fear in the face who knows where it will end......................

Is anything really made up of zeros and ones??

Re: I finally did it!

In that price range try a Yamaha or three. They have a sparkly sort of sound which you may or may not like. Either way it's distinctive and they are a lot of guitar for the money. Not all shops have them as there is a minimum amount of stock Yamaha make them carry.

Re: I finally did it!

I recently purchased a Tanglewood Semi Acoustic for just under £300, it sounds great on its own or through an amp. The guy in the store I bought it was very helpful, and whilst I played it in store myself (fairly poorly) the sales man picked it up and played a few tunes which really helped too, although I can't help feeling that he played the cheaper guitars a little worse than the Tanglewood I eventually bought to help sway my decision!

Re: I finally did it!

good for you alvee.keep trying till you find "your" guitar.our local guitar shop has a room where its just you and guitar.no snotty nosers to contend with.try a cort nice little guitar for price. good luck.....badeye

Re: I finally did it!

Congrats on getting over the fear of embarrassment and trying out some guitars...don't worry about the player snobs...most will sit around and work up a fast lick or two to play at the stores. Few can actually sit down and play something. I hang out at Charley's Guitar shop in Dallas and have never heard any of the staff say anything embarassing or disparging about players and are always helpful...plus any one of the staff are serious players... I used to be intimidated going in there knowing how good these guys are and now thoroughly feel at ease and enjoy going in and asking questions, playing stuff, and most of all...learning. The best way to find your guitar is to hang out at the various shops and play...then get someone else to play it for you...not only are the other players better players than me, it also gives me a chance to get in front of the guitar and really hear how it sounds... I've got a mandolin that I was disappointed with even though everyone loved the sound...finally someone else played it and I was blown away!

Middleaged Redneck sorta guy who refuses to grow up...passion for music, especially Southern Rock but like bout everything cept Gangsta/Hip Hop. Collect guitars, mandolins, and love to ride Harleys.

I'm way beyond that. I told my daughter her friends could only come over if they gave me lessons.

Re: I finally did it!

Al,

I dont know if they all do them or not, but as mentioned Yamaha guitars can be ok.

The big co operative in clydebank does a wide range of Yamaha. And wit hit being the co op, there shouldnt be a snooty nosed youth in there, especially in clydebank Good thing about in there is you can pay it up interest free if you really like one that is a bit over the 200.

I saw a few there for under 200 and they looked ok but I never played them.

I think there is a semi acoustic there for 245, nice looking sunburst one. I was thinking of getting one of them but I got to spend omney on this new house so I am told hmmm, Christmas is coming

Re: I finally did it!

Hey Ken,

I was in Glasgow and decided to have a wee swatch. Biggars was utter pants. McCormacks was where I had a go but they don't really have a big range. Wife says she'll take me to guitar guitar this weekend. I like the look of a Yamaha APX500 Electro Acoustic. Just over the 200 quid.

Worth a look,eh?

Bit of a hijack: This post is proof positive that America and England are two countries seperated by a common language.

Re: I finally did it!

Nice to see all of you giving Yamaha a good name. Some people on this forum who shall remain nameless seem to think there is something wrong with Yamaha guitars. Personally, I have a Yamaha FX-TBS-40 which is a list price of 550 dollars Canadian, and it is well worth that. The finish is not "heavy" and it sounds exquisite. Go get a yamaha!

Re: I finally did it!

Is this a good time to mention that I'm still hankering after a Yamaha APXT-1 electro acoustic travel guitar? Anyone have one?

Re: I finally did it!

Just to clear up the linguistic problem:

"wee swatch" - to have a short look at; to check out

"utter pants" - absolute garbage; pure rubbish; not very good.

Ken and I both come from the west of Scotland so we had a bit of an advantage on you guys.

Awright Big Man gonny geeza wee swatch et yer guitar er byraway?

Re: I finally did it!

Hi there!
Nice to see another guitar wannabee in midlife crises I'm turning 40 next year.
I had the same problem as you. Bought a real cheap guitar in a food market for 500 SEK (Swedish crowns) which should be about 40 £. It was almost unplayable and the strings really ate my fingertips off.

BUT I have always wanted to play and the piece of wood woke my interest. Went to the music store (there is only one) in my small home town. Agony and pain to go in to the young guys in the store and ask for some advice. The guys were everything that I didn't expect... They helpt me big time, and when they understood that I was a comlplete rookie with a music knowledge of about 5 chords they almost competed in teaching me easy licks to try out on the guitars. Ended up buying a Tangelwood for about 170 £ and I love it. They had another Tangelwood for around 700 £ and sure, maybe its a bit better than mine, but not enough to match the prize.

Now I've been playing since cristmas (about 3 month) and I have swore to myself (and my wife) that im going to be decent guitarist. She looked a bit sore when I took my return tax-money and bought an electric Ibanez RG but she'll get over it (she's a bit tired of the smoke on the water intro).

I visit my new young buddies in the music store almost every week (always need som new picks or something), trying out expensive guitars and learning stuff from the former frightening guys...

If you love what you do, there's no need to be good at it...

Re: I finally did it!

OK guys. The shopping aroung has been done and I now have myself a new Yamaha APX500 Electro Acoustic. Absolutely delighted with it. Sounds great, plays great. Better on both counts than my old Fender. Couldn't be happier!

I have to say I was shocked at the difference in individual guitars. And from store to store. I tried 3 identical guitars in one of the major retailers and was horrified at how badly they sounded and played. Walked round the corner and played exactly the same guitar and it was amazing.

More power to the small shops!

Re: I finally did it!

Sounds just as good right here right now.

What I mean is that the smaller stores take a lot more interest in the product they are selling.

Made me buy it!

Good to hear ye got a new guitar. So can you recommend the yamaha then? I keep thinking next time I am in the big Co am gonna go buy a semi acoustic.

Like you said about the same guitars sounding different in different shops. It depends if they have been tuned properly in the shops and how old the strings are etc.

I tihnk I might take my electronic tuner next time I go into one of these shops, keep it in my pocket and ask the assistant to tune the guitar for me, and they will if they think they will get a sale, just like having your own roadie for 5 minutes in a shop then once he gives it back to me and asks me to try it, I will then get my tuner out and test how good his tuning abilities are

I canny have anything better to d owit hmy time just now apart from think of things up like this
