Topic: struggling guitar player would love some help!

Hello all,

would really love some help, tips, etc... on this question.

I have been playing the guitar for about a year now.  I can play most of the major chords and can go from chord to chord fairly easy.  Here recently I am trying to play the notes before transitioning to the next chord.  I call them "filler" notes but i'm not sure if thats right.

For example, if i'm playing a G i can hear it in my head the notes i want to pick before i go to the C. the problem is that i don't know where the notes are on the neck of the guitar.

Basically what I am trying to do is "spruce up" my guitar playing to give it a more full sound.

Any help would be appreciated and I hope this makes sense to anyone who may read it!

Thanks in advance!

James

Have a look at this link. He calls it chomping. It's basicaly playing a note just below or above the root note of the chord you are about to play.

I see friends holdiong hands, saying "How do you do"
They're really saying, "I love you"
Louis Armstrong. Wonderful world.

Re: struggling guitar player would love some help!

Hi James and welcome to Chordie,

The natural progresion of notes from G to C is G, A and B. So G (3rd fret, 6th string) A (5th string open) B (5th string, 2nd fret) and then come in with the chord of C.

Hope that helps,

Roger

Re: struggling guitar player would love some help!

thats exactly what i'm looking for roger!  is there a site here or anywhere else for that matter that has the progressions for all the chords?  G-C, C-D, D-G, etc....?

Thanks guys!

The foundation of everything are scales.  If you know your scales, you will know your chords, and you will be able to knock out those turnarounds and fills easy as pie.

And here are exercises for bass runs in the common keys (real helpful!)

Mr Wright - what type of music are you playing?

Mainly country but anything with three chords is fun as well!  lol

Re: struggling guitar player would love some help!

Here are my two faves:

1. Gsus will put a C in your G chord, and you can use that C note to pivot to the C chord, which sounds nice, particularly if you're playing a Cadd9 (that's the chord  that looks like

3

x

So what happens is you walk B, C, D, changing to the C chord on the D.

2. I like hammering on an "a" note (2nd fret G string) right before chord changes, just adds some nice flavor.
