Topic: plagiarism

I have a topic, but it is in my eyes VERY IMPORTANT, for new, young artists, and musicians playing quit a while. We pick up music the whole day, commercials, radio and some tunes stay in your head.

It is not so difficult this subject. It is as I said very important to a lot of people.

Does someone has found or knows a website with "plagiarism songs".

QUESTION: If you copy an existing song(s)and you change all the lyrics, is this considered as 50% plagiarism???

Like instead of Blowin'in the wind, writing, the question, dear soldier, is shooting on someone else, the question is what will you do. This a new lyric, created in 10"", on the lyrics of Blowin' in the wind. AM I VIOLATING A LAW when I use those LYRICS???

Re: plagiarism

I would think not.

I would only think you are breaking a law if you ar making money from someone elses work without permission.

I have said somewhere to hel ppeople write songs to get a song and just changethe lyric, I have done it before, I will do it again. As I am not making money from anything I do, no one can sue me.

Re: plagiarism

well, Ken I am not so sure about that. There many artists, who are breaking the law. TAKE the SONG: MY WAY.

Originally written by a French singer/writer/performer with the title: comme d'habitude. The translation into English was done by Paul Anka I think, but I do not know if they had to pay money for the rights, for the music YES, for the lyrics: no clue, but I still think that you don't have to pay at that moment for lyrics. A song can be either only music, better "instrumental", or existing, classic form: music AND lyrics. The point is that I really don't know 1 thing about it, maybe laws are different in the different countries. One thing I do know, you can contact the artist, manager, but most important: the international or national company where you have to give your songs, often even translated in notes and/or chords, same with lyrics, and where you get the rights. That is the main reason I wrote this topic. Maybe the song "MY WAY" is the best song to discover how it works. I think of songs, very famous now, that you can make an agreement with the record company, about how much. A very sad example is JOHN FOGERTY, who wasn't even allowed to play 1 song from the CCR period, even a new song "the old man down the road" seemed to have enough similarity to pursue him. By the way, if you here Susie-Q (written by screaming J Hawkins) and listen to the song green river, very similar. I have an old PETER GREEN period, Fleetwood Mac CD, I thought, sh** I have this song twice, but after 1 minute only, you could hear that it was another song.

Re: plagiarism

I think it is about time a lawyer that deals with the music industry should pick up and learn guitar and come into chordie and help us out with all these legal questions  <img src="images/smiley_icons/icon_lol.gif" border=0 alt="Laughing">

Re: plagiarism

You know that I always liked to be a lawyer, but I choosed finaly to become a medical doctor, you know my dad was a doctor...

But I should have studied for lawyer, following evening classes to learn all about music, notes and as instrument guitar and piano. After the combination studies, I wanted to go to a "music univesity, and more specific popmusic. You can go to Oxford, I know they have that kind of University, because I saw it. After my "OXFORD period, I wanted to go to the USA, to have a special degree, isn't it a masterdegree? which would have cost me another 2 or 3 years. Having all these certificates, be sure that you get and very fast, the occasion to be contacted by major record companies, having a high and very well paid position. More, I even think that a job like this don't exist at this moment, if you see the years you have to go to all those colleges, in Belgium, 5 years to become a lawyer, add 3 more years before you can defend someone, add all the years you follow music class, 8 years in total here, TO BECOME REALLY the best, also arrangements and all things (legal or illegal) related to music. I do play, quit good, the guitar. The piano should be my second choice, why? a lot of songs are composed on a piano, see chordie songs: Elton John, Billy Joel, it is very easy to see if a song is composed on piano, or on guitar. Even the beatles, the more they were busy, the more complex there songs became. Add, besides those 8 years, 2 or 3 years in Oxford, and to be the most complete music lawyer, another 2-3 years for, is it bachelor master's degree in music. Grand total: if you don't need to start over a year will be around 12 to 15 years of study. MONEY ????

You need to live too, maybe you can find in between jobs as a studio musician. And all this was my dream. I am 51 years old, so not for me. The only thing I know is, having studied so long, and certainly if you are good, has to, because of all the years you spend, I am convinced that 1) you can play almost with every group 2) you will be asked for sure to worgk for big record companies 3) you are the perfect match to be manager for top groups, having the extra ability to play together with them. But you will be about 32 years old and than you still have to start
