Topic: confused again

Can someone explain what chucking is???

I was trying to play a CCR song and was told by an online help place to play down/up chuck as the strumming pattern.

I am only a beginner and havnt a clue what this means.

Re: confused again

Never heard the term used in relation to guitar. I would hazzard a guess that it means to muffle the strings with the palm of your picking hand. ( Palming )

As a drinking term it takes on a whole new meaning.... <img src="images/smiley_icons/icon_biggrin.gif" border=0 alt="Very Happy">

Re: confused again

I think the song you're referring to is "Looking Out my Backdoor" by CCR.  The chucking is used at the beginning of the song, before the drum starts.  Basically, muting all the strings while strumming.

Re: confused again

Thanks Kahuna

the song was Have You Ever Seen The Rain and i couldnt figure out how the strumming pattern had a weird sound and when i asked this bloke on line that is what he said you do. You strum down then up then chuck....

does that mean you mute all the strings on the strumm or just the strings you shape the chord on??

many thanks

Re: confused again

Hi stevenmc2,

CHUCKING - Playing relentless sixteenth or eighth notes with your right hand. Rythmic pattern is created by alternately muting the strings with the left hand and allowing chords or notes to sound.

Chucking is used in funk music, if you listen to bands like, Chic or Sister Sledge, you can here a lot of it. I got this definition off the net, I know these groups and listen to funk.
If your just beginning your moving up a gear might be worth getting a Metronome as you'll need to keep good time,Play the Chord on the way down and Mute the Chord on the up strum, don't know the song so don't know how often it does it.
Have bit of a practice, pick  some chords do some strumming up and down and throw in a chuck when you feel like, before you know it you'll be a Funkmeister. This is not a definitive answer just trying to point you in the right direction, don't know if you use other forums but check out Guitar for beginners and beyond you can google it, they've helped me a lot.

Good Luck

Chris

Re: confused again

Sometimes, even if you play for years, you find a lot of new stuff or terminologies, and to be honest, it is really frustrating sometimes.
Like if you look for a song here, you can often see if it is written by (for) piano, or guitar. Also you will find the same song in a lot of chords, like Cdim, or F#7/9, and if you like to play, and you are already playing quit long, you can skip chords.
It should be a must to learn to read notes, and once you know how to read them, play them. Unfortunately, I am the old school, not speaking of "DO", but speaking of "C".
