Topic: The Point of Reverb

So, reverb is generally created artificially by adding a slight delay to the signal,  mimicking audio echoes in a room.  We often only hear it artificially created because we are all too often recording DI or in small rooms with horrible acoustics.

I thought it might be nice to hear what the real thing sounds like, though.

This is a room recording of a local group called Pickwick, done in the University of Washington Library, a magnificent Gothic structure.  Besides the dudes fantastic set of pipes, take a moment to appreciate what a great room can do for your sound.  There is nothing better than the real thing.

Re: The Point of Reverb

You are so right, Jerome. That room has fabulous acoustics.
I spent a year at a Benedictine Monastery in Cullman, Alabama that had a huge chapel with a giant pipe organ with six keyboards, a twelve trumpet choir and 400 monks on the floor below the choir loft singing Gregorian Chant in four part harmony. the reverb effect was perfect.
Any of you guys reading here would be amazed how good all that sounded. I could have been hooked for life.

We pronounce it "Guf Coast".
Ya'll wanna go down to the Guf?

Re: The Point of Reverb

That "room" needs to be re-purposed from the Suzzallo Reading Room to the Suzzallo Listening Room. Great Stuff.

And what a cool name is Suzzallo - it sounds like a do-wop group.

Rule No. 1 - If it sounds good - it is good!

And here is Willie with another less on how to be awesome in an awesome room.

"I Never Cared for You" from the Teatro album, which was recorded in an old movie theater.

Keep these topics going.  I am learning here, albeit, very slowly

I have finally found happiness in my life.  Guitars, singing, beer and camping.  And they all intertwine wonderfully.

Re: The Point of Reverb

As someone that started life singing, I can throughly appreciate the acoustics in a room.  There is NOTHING quite like it.  Give me a big ole empty room and I will stay in it for hours, I've done it.  In high school my favorite thing to do was stay after school and sneak into the lecture hall and just sing.  A lot of public bathrooms also have awesome acoustics.  I fondly recall a friend and myself singing in one of the lesser used bathrooms in highschool while we were getting primped for a musical as parents were arriving to watch said musical (we just had chorus parts).  We stepped out of the bathroom and there was a small gathering at the doorway just listening.  My mother came with me to listen to me sing a NYSSMA solo (voice competition -singing in front of judges for the purpose of being judged, as well as trying out for All County and eventually All State Choir positions) and she was blown away by the acoustics in the high school classroom I sang in.  Mom cried, because she'd never heard me sing in such an acoustic setting before.  When I switched bedrooms with my kids last year, I completely emptied out ONE of the rooms and brought the kids into the empty room and showed them this beautiful phenomenom of music... they got bored with me after a while and left me alone with the acoustics.  Me, my voice, a chair, and my guitar hung out for a good hour.  When my kids grow up, I might keep a room empty just for the acoustics.

Art and beauty are in the eyes of the beholder.
What constitutes excellent music is in the ears of the listener.
