Topic: reading tabs??? not sure what this means!

hi all:

my apologies if this is a duplicate, but i did try to search and find an answer...
I have used chordie for some time now, but have not posted.. your help is appreciated

i know how to read music and most tabs, but i cannot figure this tab out from the dire straits, so far away from me:
http://www.chordie.com/chord.pere/www.u … ;id=147104

it looks like this:
*************************************
riff 1 pick lightly
|-------------------------------|

|-2-7-9-7--9-5------------------|

|-2s7-7-6--6-4------------------| x2

|------------------2h4h2h4-2----|

|------------------0------------|

|-------------------------------|
*****************************************

... seems unusual!!  or maybe i just don't know!
BTW is there a resource which might have this type of info archived??

many thanks Byron

Re: reading tabs??? not sure what this means!

I'm not sure what part you are having problems understanding.  So if I'm stating the obvious, my apollogies.

The h means you hammer on. i.e, play the 2 and hammer your finger onto the 4th fret. Probably using your 1st and and 3rd finger.
The s means you slide from one note to the next. i.e, from the 2 to the 7. Play the note on the 2nd fret and slide your finger upto the 7th fret.

Hope that helps. smile

Re: reading tabs??? not sure what this means!

thanks for reply:

i think what i was misinterpreting was the unlabelled lines--- i thought each stood for the whole riff...ergo the confusion... i now see that there are 6 lines for each riff, and this must be the 6 strings... didn't seem obvious to me, but that is the only thing it can be!

so the following (annotated with string letters) must be??
*************************************

E  |-------------------------------|

B  |-2-7-9-7--9-5------------------|

G  |-2s7-7-6--6-4------------------| x2

D  |------------------2h4h2h4-2----|

A  |------------------0------------|

E  |-------------------------------|
*****************************************

Thanks again
