Re: Pa. Gathering

It rarely snows here in October unless you're close Lake Erie. Just like in Buffalo, storms come across the lake, pick up moisture and dump it in NW Pa. By the time they get across the mountains they've pretty much been squeezed dry. We did have a freak October storm in 2011. Leaves were still on the trees. What a mess! But typically our first snow doesn't hit until December; sometimes even January.

Re: Pa. Gathering

OK. It's official. It will be the weekend of October 9, 10, 11.

I'll be taking off work on Thursday the 8th to start getting things ready. Local folks will be coming on Saturday the 10th.

This place is in the middle of nowhere so there is very little else to do. Zurf, you think Altoona is close to nothing? You ain't seen nothing yet. smile However......There is one event going on that weekend that may interest folks that carry a fondness for the "Good Ole Days" of steam engines  and the horse drawn farming era.

http://svheritagedays.com/  It's about 5 miles away and runs all three days.

For the specific location, email me.

Re: Pa. Gathering

Man, that sounds like a lotta fun!

I'll be in Pittsburgh for about 5 or 6 days at the end of this month - alas, that will use up my travel budget for the rest of the year... perhaps next time.

We can beat them just for one day
We can be heroes just for one day

Y'all are killing us here! smile

D and I have had zero vacation since our remarriage and after seeing those beautiful pictures, you have both of us panting to get to your little shindig, my friends.

The BIG disappointment came when I saw where I thought UJB was posting from: South Carolina. However, the "SC" stands for "South Central" Pennsylvania. sad

Oh well. Y'all will just have to manage without us, ah reckon. wink

Yeah, sorry Bill. We're up here in snow country.

It's a pretty cool event. I usually go every year. They really focus on the days when the steam engine was the workhorse of industry. There's a lot of Arts & Crafts stuff too but that's not my thing. I can appreciate the amount of effort that goes into making all that stuff but I'm not one to buy any of it. Now AuntJoe on the other hand.......................

A couple years ago there was a group of Civil War reenactors  that set up camp. Every few hours they would shoot off one of the cannons they brought with them. It would  really echo all through the valley. I told one of the guys that I would take the cannon home with me so they didn't have to load it back up on the trailer. For some reason he didn't accept my gracious offer. He did however offer to sell it to me; for $25,000. yikes

Not sure that I'll be overnighting, but I do want to come. If I overnight, it would probably be Sat into Sun unless Normtheguitar works things out and needs a ride.

Bring cots and/or air mattresses and tents?

Sounds good!  We'll need some details to try to firm up a plan on where to stay and what to do with the kids (leave em with grandma, likely).  I'll get at ya via email!

Bring that pop-up we sheltered in for the hurricane. There is a vacant spot right next to me. There is a water hydrant and electrical outlet.

I've been thinking about the kids and may have an idea. 2 girls in the 10 year old area, right?

This sounds like fun also.  Can I get an address to plug in my gps?  Will be looking for camping facilities, if any.  I Hope my schedule lets us attend.

Re: Pa. Gathering

OK. We're 6 weeks out so I thought it was about time to bring this back to the top.

MKM and crew are confirmed. My brother and his girl also. That takes the 2 bedrooms. There is still a sofa-bed, a day bed and a futon.

There are 4 local musicians confirmed as well; at least one is staying the night. Being single he'll probably get the day bed. There are also a few locals coming just to socialize.

I'll have food and beer but if you're a liquor drinker you'll need to bring it. I was never into it so I know nothing about all the different forms of liquor that are out there.

Zurf, your pop-up can be parked about 20yds from my trailer.

My brother will be arriving Friday afternoon. He wants to go the the range to shoot a few of my guns and then we'll be headed up. I'll be there from Friday night on.

I would like to get confirmations in by the end of September so I can figure out how much of everything I'll need. Look at your schedules and let me know.

I just have ONE question... should we bring the REST of the barn up in the back of the truck so you TOO can have an itty bitty campfire?  ha ha ha ha!  Just kidding!  I know... I know... big_smile

Great! Hope things work out. I'll be looking forward to meeting you.

And just so you know; I'll have 5 of my guitars there so there's no need for you to travel with one. 4- 6 string and 1- 12string.

Re: Pa. Gathering

Thanks - guitars aren't too easy to travel with! And in any case, I enjoy trying out some different guitars. It will also leave plenty of room in my luggage for bottles of bourbon for Zurf...

Re: Pa. Gathering

I've got two six string acoustics here, and a twelve string acoustic, plus a cheap Ibanez SG knockoff with very nice action.  Mrs. Zurf has approved a visit. We still don't have a guest room, but we have an improved air bed with memory foam that is very comfortable.

Re: Pa. Gathering

Caution, hitchhiker from England arriving in the states in October.  Easily distinguishable when he plays guitar as it will sound like a man with 8 fingers per hand but will look like a standard guy with proper fingers and thumbs.

Looking forward to the PA Gathering and seeing all you Chordians again (including any that I haven't met yet before)!!

Re: Pa. Gathering

Thanks for that endorsement, MKM!
OK, so just to keep you updated (UJB, Amy & Zurf), I have not yet finalised my plans, for which I apologize! The fly in the ointment is an ongoing dental problem which has gradually got worse over the last couple of weeks. Not to go into the gory details, I was hoping it would be diagnosed and sorted by now, but unfortunately not. Antibiotics have not helped, either. So, obviously, I'm feeling a bit worried about travelling at the moment! I am going back to see my doctor in the next couple of days (hoping for a quick referral to a specialist). But nothing in our health system happens very quickly! Will keep you posted...

Re: Pa. Gathering

normtheguitar, the time is blocked out on my calendar.  I will do what works out.  Good luck with that tooth.

UncleJoe, I'm coming on Saturday and plan to overnight to Sunday.  I'll likely just bring a tent and a cot as the camper is a bit of a pain to set up and take down for one night.   I'd like to make some wings for folks as a contribution to the food.  How many should I plan for?

Amy and Jim, I'm really looking forward to seeing you folks again.  It's possible I'll have a bottle of something for y'all to sample.

Re: Pa. Gathering

Thanks Zurf. The one good aspect of not having booked a flight yet is that prices are falling at the moment. If I wait long enough, I might get a free flight! OK, probably not...
