Topic: Have I Posted This Before? (Chordie Song/Writer Of The Year)

Due to my being bat-s**t, I often forget that I may have done or said something before, (The bookstores love me because of this! wink  ) so if this is the case with this post, please excuse me.

Having been involved even in a small way with your songwriting and other musical talents, I've been thinking about us launching our own "Grammy" awards.

I would be willing to assist in any way I can on putting this together and just a rough draft would be the "active" membership votong. "Active" meaning x amount of posts per year.

Award criteria/prizes would be set by a committee of mods/admins and perhaps the site owner.

****The more I write, the more I think that something like this has been proposed before and may even be "in the works". I second-guess myself a lot these days.****

What does the forum/mods/admin think? We have some super-talented Song/Wordsmiths on Chordie and I think it would be a kick to recognize the "best of the best".

I'm not speaking as a mod, just a guy. I would be a bit uncomfortable with this. One of the draws of Chordie is the open, inviting, fun atmosphere. I would be concerned that introducing competitiveness would make the vibe weird. And as a self conscious songwriter I would not want to know that my tune finished dead last. wink

I agree BGD, Maybe you could have a Flavor of the month ( like Baskin Robins Ice Cream).

BGD,

I totally understand and I'd like the rest of the forum to voice their support or objections. It may be a bad idea and if so, then so be it.

My point (not argument - too negative a term) of support or suggestion would be that if one didn't wish their work to be considered, it would be their choice not to enter the competition.

This is the kind of interaction I am after in discussing this -- especially from the mods -- as BGD has just done.

I'm just very fortunate to be among such brilliant writers/performers, but at the same time, I also recognize that more than just a few are very modest about your talents.

Please lets hear from the rest of you about this, okay?

I certainly agree with your estimation of the talent within the Chordie family, and I'm sure that talent spans the whole range of skill levels. The common thing that bonds us is that we all love music and guitars, and this site celebrates that union in a non-competitive, inviting atmosphere. I think we can each recognize great work as it's posted, without making it a contest. In the end, it is the effort, creativity, and the love of song that 's being recognized and rewarded. If the writer enjoyed creating it, then it's mission accomplished.

Just my 2-cents worth.

Aha!! smile I believe the "penny" just dropped, TF! smile It is obviously a major part of the established Chordie philosophy, and of course I understand and may have been out of line to suggest such a thing. If so, then apologies are in order and are offered.

Thanks for understanding this was nothing more than a "I'm proud as hell of you guys and ladies, so here's an idea" - kinda thing. I just didn't think it through to its logical conclusion and I regret that. I don't know for sure, but perhaps I may have reached your conclusion on my own 10 years ago, my friend! big_smile

Jeez! When I look at it now, I can see it could have really caused a great deal of discomfort. Please understand; this is not what I had in mind.

i kinda like the idea.i even have a few of songs by u guys that i think
are worthy of recognition.
I do lots of songs that are pretty ordinary so i`d be happy to come last.
Not a problem.
I think the good songs should be recognised by us.I know that listening to
u good musicians gives me a buzz,It inspires me to get better.
U only have to look @ some countries where there is no competition
they end up a basket case.
Competition raises standards, personally, i might find it pushes me to something better.

Bill,  I don't really think that there is a "philosophy" to Chordie per-se.  But there is a "mentoring" factor generally among the membership, which might be diminished from introducing a competative "flavor" to the mix.

Not a bad idea, really..... there is a trend in current entertainment towards that sort of thing which might appeal to some. I do have concerns about the "cost" though. (not in monetary terms, although you might already know that from your grasp of language)  wink

Interesting topic for discussion though, and I'm looking forward to reading the comments!

I am in complete agreement with TF here and I feel that bringing in an element of competition would bring a detrimental effect to Chordie.

On a couple of occasions we have had several people record the same song but that was for fun and to see how different people interpret lyrics and chords, not an "I am better than you" thing.

Well Bill in the past we had a songwriting competition.
The competition was run by Russ Harding the recording mod. It was just for fun no prizes were involved he judged.
I seem to remember the comp had constraints of which chords you could use.
The comp was poorly entered with just a couple of entries. Me being one I think it was a tie LOL.
I think the idea was a good one. I regularly enter Ourstages competitions.
Judging from the past the problems would be the will to run it and the members willing to enter it.
