Topic: Fishing Season - Four Days to Go!

I'm jittery like a kid before Christmas!

Our fishing season starts on April 1, and with my new knee (done Dec 5, 2016) working great, I'm incredibly excited. There's still some snow on the ground, and most lakes are still frozen over, but the rivers are running. Early season requires some special prep to stay warm and dry, but this is usually when the biggest sea trout are still in the rivers, as well as some small Atlantic salmon.

Soooooo excited!

Re: Fishing Season - Four Days to Go!

Hope you have a great opening day TF.

My new knee (7 weeks old) and I took one of my kayaks out yesterday for a short float on a local stream.  Water was a little high and stained, visibility about 6" and temp around 46 degrees F.  I didn't get a single hit in about 2 hours of fishing.  However, with warmer weather on the way, stream temps should hit the magic 55 degree mark in another week or so,  waking up the smallies. smile

Glad your second knee replacement went so well, DE ... good to get out and about again I'll bet. Found this guy on the Internet when I googled your name ... look familiar?

Haha!  I remember that pic was taken by one of my fishing buddies during a float on the New River in West Virginia about 10 years ago.  I used the pic for the cover of the first CD I made of some of my songs called "Hell and High Water".  As I've gotten older I've migrated to sit-on-top kayaks, easier floats and fewer adult beverages while on the water. smile

Re: Fishing Season - Four Days to Go!

threadjack alert!!   So...about that kayak, that man, and that WV river.

Just after Dirty Ed got that kayak in the picture he also got a beautiful new carbon fiber paddle to go with it. I had been wanting to try that model of kayak, and we were camped right alongside the New River just down from some class I riffles.  I asked to borrow it for ten or fifteen minutes.  He agreed, and told me to try his new, shiny carbon fiber paddle too.

I was having so much fun in the kayak, I came back two hours later with a scratched up carbon fiber paddle, a scratched up and muddy kayak (I did splash some river water to rinse it), and a huge grin.  I saw Dirty Ed by the campfire sitting on a cooler with a fairly large pile of empties beside him and a guitar in his hand.  "Sorry I took longer than I said," says I. "No problem," Dirty Ed said as he stood up to take another beer from the cooler.  It wasn't until I put his kayak back at his campsite and changed out of my river clothes and returned to the campfire that I realized that Dirty Ed was sitting on my cooler and the pile of empties beside him had been mine.   :-)

I believe that was the same weekend you unveiled Small Medium at Large. A few of the boys were a little over-served and while they couldn't remember the name of the song they could remember the content and kept shouting, "Play thet midjit song, Ken. Play thet thar midjit song!" (sic)

And yes - real good times.

Re: Fishing Season - Four Days to Go!

The weekend fishing wasn't much good. Several sub-zero nights and snowfall last week formed large ice shelves along the banks of the 4 rivers we visited, so that we couldn't safely get to the water. The good news is that this week is supposed to be milder with some warm rain, so next weekend should be a better scenario.

My wife and I actually had plans to visit NZ about 10 years ago. We were going to do some trout fishing and horseback riding, and spend a couple weeks there. Some health issues came about, and it probably won't happen now ... but who knows? If we avoided fishing in the snow, we'd miss some of the biggest trout to be caught all year. The largest ones spend the winter inland, and then head for the estuaries once things start to warm up. Just need to dress properly for wading in cold water, and everything's fine.

Re: Fishing Season - Four Days to Go!

TF

that picture of fishing with ice and snow reminds me of an old joke... here goes---

These three men are ice fishing one day on a lake  that  they have fished  for years. The  had always secured the best spots before others arrived and  this year was no different.  Just as they had settled in to the best fishing areas,  a young lad arrived on the scene. The young boy walks right past their fishing spots and goes over to an area where no one ever fishes- the poorest spot on the lake.  The boy baits his hook and with in a minute is pulling out large fish, one after another. The older gents aren't even getting a nibble. Then the boy leaves to use the outhouse on shore. Immediately after the boy leaves the spot the older men convene on it and fish it like crazy, but don't even get a nibble.   Soon the boy returns and sees that they men have taken his spot. He says nothing, and just moves over to the area which they had vacated. He baits his hook and starts fishing - immediately pulling some more whoppers.  The old guys are stunned. Finally, with their pride damaged, and their curiosity getting the better of them,  they go over to where the boy is busy pulling another huge one out of the water. The eldest of the gents says to the boy.... what is your secret son, how is it you are so lucky.  The boys looks up with wide eyes and mumble "kephwrjhfwrm"   The second man says , "what ?" speak English young man!   The boy again looks up and repeats ""kephwrjhfwrm"" .  Finally the third man gets right up to the boy and says " son you need to respect your elders - now tell us what is the damn secret to catching all these fish!?"
The boy stands up , puts his hands by his mouth and spits out this enormous wad - and then calmly says - "keep your worms warm"!  smile

Re: Fishing Season - Four Days to Go!

Way to go TF!  I've always said a man that won't fish in cold or rain really doesn't want to fish.

I did a float Wednesday and managed to put 4 smallmouth in the boat.  It was 72 degrees, the birds were singing and I just wore a t-shirt and pfd with my waders.  The next day it dropped to 36 degrees and was spitting snow - spring weather in Ohio .......  sad

The warming trend is coming back this week and I hope to get out in the yak a couple times again.
