Topic: Major Error!

On your website, the song "We're Going Wrong" was incorrectly attributed to Eric Clapton. Jack Bruce wrote "We're Going Wrong." Please correct this!!

Thank you.

Re: Major Error!

Actually, there are many many songs which are attributed incorrectly. If we were all music librarians, it would be a serious problem. However, the purpose of the subtitles is for indexing the songs in such a way that users can locate what they are looking for - they are not intended to be formal, encyclopedic or scholarly citations.

For example; the 60's classic "Come Together" is indexed under Jesse Colin Young. However, he did not write the song - - - he only made the song famous. The actual writer of the song was Dino Valenti (real name Chester William Powers). He sold the rights to that song (and others) to an attorney so as to pay for his legal defense following a drug bust. Following his release from prison, Valenti became the lead singer for Quicksilver Messenger Service.

The fact that a song's indexing is "incorrect" is not a problem with Chordie. Chordie merely crawls the web and assembles files into a readily usable format.

Re: Major Error!

There are some words about this in http://www.chordie.com/faq.php.

Basically: All songs are attributed to "the artist", not "the writer". The main reason for this is that tablature is a description of how to play a song like a specific artist is playing it. It is not a reproduction of an authors work.

Ideally it whould be noted in the song who wrote it. Please add this as a comment to the song.

Re: Major Error!

I can see how that would benefit your website's visitors, but it seems unethical. However, such entires are a violation of copyright law which requires that the work be attributed to the copyright owner. In this case ("We're Going Wrong"), the work should be attributed to Jack Bruce.

Just my two cents.

Thanks.

Re: Major Error!

I agree that ideally all songs should state as much info as possible. Including who wrote the text and who composed the music. I have added an comment to this song, telling that it was written by Jack Bruce.

To categorize songs primarily by the artist name is not uncommon. If you go to a record shop, and look for the single "We're going wrong", you will most likely find it under "C" for "Clapton".

About half the songs are under the name of a band. These would be very hard to find if they were listed by the author.

Anyway, Chordie is a search engine and a hobby project of mine. It would not be practically possible to recategorize nearly one million songs.
