I am wondering if anyone knows of any original bands from 1990 onwards.
Got to have original sound, more than two albums. Do not sound like anyone else, do not use other riffs that other bands have used, have their own dress sense.
So, a band/singer that is original that have influenced other bands 1990 onwards.
I find it hard myself.
I dont think I can think of any, can you?

These guys are pretty unique in my book.
There hasn't been an "original" band since Grog the Caveman first banged two rocks together. Everyone is influenced by someone, but getting a fresh sound is sometimes hard.

2 good replies already. they might be giants, yeah, they were a bit different but so far, although not all songs, Janes addiction is high up on the list for original rock bands, one of my favourite bands as well, lol.

While watching The Henry Rollins Show tonight I saw a very interesting, bizarrely unique band. They call themselves the Mars Volta. Almost experimental but some structural balance and melodic unison was evident at times. They're definately not your average 'me too Lou or plain Jane' type of band. I liked it, alot!
Was NIRVANA original in the early nineties?
They inspired a lot of other groups, and they gave us an image about the nineties.
Agree with Jerome on this one. It's very hard too come up with something original nowadays. Like he said, everyone is influenced by someone.
I was going to say the Happy Mondays until I read the part about using other bands riffs. They ripped off everyone from Donovan to John Denver! Their sound was imo pretty unique and original, and they influenced quite a few bands.

Mars Volta is a great studio band, but they aren't that good live.
And Grog was wholly original! Why no love for Grog?

A few bands getting mentioned that I have never heard of, and I know there will be totally original bands that I have never heard of but neither has anyone else. Tells a tale? crap or no P.R from record companies?
Phil Nirvana did influence a lot but not original. They brought the grunge scene to get noticed but they didnt actually start it or the great sound they had.
A band or two I am thinking of is "Great big sea" and "drop kick murphy's"
Why? very heavy from drop kicks but use bag pipes and mandolins etc, I tihnk quite original for a punkn band.
Great big sea are like a rock folk band, I think they are a superb band that should have international stardom by now. they ooze talent. I would love to see them come to glasgow soon.

Pulp (lyrically) and Radiohead (sonically) were original I think
Different Class and OK Computer were highlights of 90's for me.
I don't claim to like Kid A - but it is weird enough to be original!
Upyerkilt, thanks for the info. I was sure, and it is a common problem, that NIRVANA, was just lucky, compared to groups playing the same style.
BUT WHAT I WANTED TO KNOW WHAT KIND OF MUSIC FOLLOWED AFTER THE BIG BOOM IN THE SIXTIES, in what style did this music "continue"
FOR ME: there are NO ORIGINAL groups, because every artist pick up music or steal music from others. INDEED who can tell what is ORIGINAL??
Cake is one of my favorite bands--don't know if they're original, or I just can't catogorize them. Just a wierd, in a good way, synthisis of a lot of different styles.
Red hot chili peppers were original in the late 80's and early nineties. Just check out their early albums such as freaky styley, The Uplift Mofo Party Plan, Mothers Milk and sort of blood sugar sex magik. After that their sound was fairly commerical.

yep the chilis were original in ways.
I have all their albums, red hot chili peppers ( the album and freaky styely were out in early 80's,
What made them original was the way the bass was played, a funky lead bass rythum and their unusual way of writing songs.
Uplift is my favourite chilis album, but some of my favourite songs from them come from freaky and their self named album.

Flower buckets on their heads and clothes pins on their nose when they sing, lawnmower man dress suits, and a sound unmatched, thus far anyways. Originality is out there to be found, one has to have an open mind and sense of humor when conducting their search.
