Topic: MUSIC versus LYRICS

As known, I am not from an English speaking country. I noticed a big difference between TODAY and 40 years ago.
I don't mention DUTCH lyrics and songs, but ENGLISH lyrics and songs. About me, I have no problems at all with lyrics in English. BUT when I was 18 years old, fresh from school all I knew was: School English, School French.
Also, when they played a song, I just listened to the melody and never to the lyrics.
Today, most of the 18 year old people, here, listen more to the lyrics, but you have to face the facts= there are more people who have difficulties with English AND French, speaking and understanding. We hear a lot of English lyrics and melodies, and this can result in funny situations.
WEDDING: the first song, bride and groom, dancing on "Please release me"because they love the melody and don't understand lyrics.
WHAT IS YOUR OPINION ABOUT THIS:
You listen to a song for the very first time, what is the most important item or impression? I think that our attention goes first to the melody, followed by lyrics. Am I right or not?

Re: MUSIC versus LYRICS

i like a song with meaningful lyrics but I do love some songs that it is the music that makes me listen to it and not the lyrics.
Tyhen there are some songs that the music is not up to much but the lyrics are great, I would still listen to a song like that.

a bit of both really but when you have meaningful lyrics and a great tune then you have the perfect song, or I do

Re: MUSIC versus LYRICS

Depends.  Generally, I prefer lyrics.  That said, Iron Maiden has some exceptionally good lyrics but I can't listen to them for more than a few seconds because I can't stand their speed metal sound.  On the other hand, the John Butler Trio have some lyrics that don't even make sense but with the rhythmic delivery fitting in with the musical accompaniment, I like the groove and listen longer.

In general, though, it's lyrics that hook me to a song.  If I wind up playing it, it's not going to sound anything like the original anyway, so I'm on the listen for lyrics.
