Topic: Post formatted songs

You can now post your own songs in chopro-format, and they will show up formatted on the forum. Note that this should only be used on lyrics that you have written yourself.

The new format is:

<div class="pre"><pre>[SONG]Insert song here in chopro-format[/SONG]</pre></div>

If you do not know what the chopro-format is, learn about it here:

Re: Post formatted songs

If you use this code in the text:

"open straight bracket" song "close straight bracket"
{t: My song}
{st: Admin}
The first [C]line [Am]
The second [G]line [C]
"open straight bracket" /song]"close straight bracket"

You will get a song that looks like this:

My song Admin

The first [C]line [Am]

The second [G]line [C]

Re: Post formatted songs

really nice format ill use it for the contest

Re: Post formatted songs

does this only work on this site?

Re: Post formatted songs

The chordpro (also called chopro) format is a common format for typesetting guitar songs.

There are several Windows/Linux programs that are able to render this format. There are also a few webservices/webpages that renders the format.

Re: Post formatted songs

Hey, Great site! I've been a member for awhile but just recently tried to post some songs on my site ;

www.geocities.com/guitar_zan_randy/music.html

I have the file typed in chopro but on my site it is a .txt file because the filemanager won't allow it to be saved as anything else.I've tried .pro,.cho, etc.

Any info on how I can get it to display like the other songs on chordie?

Can you at chordie still use it?

Re: Post formatted songs

i am also planning to make a song but i find it harder, o made a song but i think it sounds similar to other song

Re: Post formatted songs

Yes, it can be used, though it makes it a bit harder for Chordie to guess the filetype. Windows can make life hard for you if you want to save as chopro, but it should be possible. The trick is usually to select *.* as filetype, and write mysong.pro as songname.

You can also rename it from the command line. Save the song mysong.txt in c:songs.

* Go Start-run, and write "cmd".

* write "cd songs"

* write "rename mysong.txt mysong.pro"

You can actually use the Chordie engine to format your own songs. You can do that by combining your web-address and a link to Chordie. Take a good look at this url, and you will figure it out:

<a href="http&#58;&#47;&#47;www.chordie.com/chord.pere/www.geocities.com/guitar_zan_randy/still_crazy.txt" target="_blank"> http://www.chordie.com/chord.pere/www.g … m/guitar_z an_randy/still_crazy.txt</a>

"Sanctimonious Profiteering Fear-Mongers Out!"
Here's a little political commentary blues number - it encapsulates my personal perspective on current USA politics.

The lyric is wordy, so the tempo must be relatively slow.  Melody is your typical 12-bar blues line.

Sanctimonious Profiteering Fear-Mongers Out!by, James McCormick, October 1, 2006

12-bar Blues, Last line of each verse is a sing-along

. . . .

Well they [C]give us smoke and mirrors, Because it’s [C]show biz all the way

And the [C]talking heads on Fox, Are [C]cheering them every day.

They’ll try to [F7]whip you into a frenzy, With the [F7]facts that they do spin.

And if you [C]try to ask a question, well then you’re [C]un-American.

Let’s use the [G7]power of the ballot box, Don’t just [F7]sit around and pout

[C]Sanctimonious profiteering fear-mongers [G7]out!!!

. . . .

The hy-[C]pocrisy is appalling, Why don’t they [C]just resign in shame.

But in-[C]stead they blame their critics for [C]soiling their good name.

And when the [F7]lobbyists come a-calling with big [F7]sacks of campaign cash,

They’re [C]checking their investmentsand [C]shredding all the trash.

It’s [G7]time to change the linens, Let the [F7]fat cats hear you shout.

[C]Sanctimonious profiteering fear-mongers [G7]out!!!

. . . .

Sitting [C]right there in our White House, Is Tweedle-[C]Dum and Tweedle-Dee.

With their [C]neo-conservative chicken-hawk[C]corporate coterie

Well their [F7]children they are safe at home, they aren’t [F7]dieing in this war

Their [C]quarterly profit reports are out, and Wall [C]Street just screams for more,

I’m so [G7]sick of this direction, We [F7]need a brand newroute,

[C]Sanctimonious profiteering fear-mongers [G7]out!!!

. . . .

First they’ll [C]wrap it up in scripture, Then try to [C]stab you with our flag.

Then they’ll [C]tap into your phone lines, And they’ll [C]slap you with a gag

They con-[F7]veniently forget this is the [F7]Land of the Free

Because their [C]goal is to establish heredi-[C]tary theocracy

So let’s [G7]take away their pulpit, Let’s [F7]balance out their clout

[C]Sanctimonious profiteering fear-mongers [G7]out!!!

. . . .

They’ve got some [C]bloviating pundits, Who are not [C]burdened by the facts

They’ve got some [C]spiteful TV preachers with [C]hair made out of wax

They’ve got that [F7]jerk down at work who [F7]makes the racist jokes

They’ve got those [C]wacky fundamentalists who think that [C]Science is a hoax

This coa-[G7]lition of the willing I can [F7]say without a doubt

[C]Sanctimonious profiteering fear-mongers [G7]out!!!

. . . .

Let’s have a [C]rational discussion, About some [C]issues that are real

If you can [C]set aside for just one moment your [C]crusading zeal

And now [F7]please don’t patronize me with a [F7]pandering attitude

I’m so [C]sick and tired of bombast and sim-[C]plistic platitudes

Let’s re-[G7]mind the demagogues of what this [F7]country’s all about

[C]Sanctimonious profiteering fear-mongers [G7]out!!!

Re: Post formatted songs

Ken - Glad you like it . . . I will getting some friends together soon to record it.  It is a fun song to sing no matter what your nationality.

I'm sure there are a few sanctimonious, profiteering, fear-mongers over in your neck of the woods . . . so feel free to belt it out.  Maybe you could alter the lyric a bit to make it more relevant to your polititicians.

Lets hope piere gets his new site up and running soon, the one we can post our own stuff onto.

Also since I have a daughter ( but only 6) I could sing this for her too. I might even just steal your lyrics and adpapt it to my own style, lol Or I might copy it exactly.

Cheers Ken

Re: Post formatted songs

Thats a really nice song james... This is the first time i've came onto the forum and i'm impressed... ive got a little girl of 18months and the words are special.... ive had a little go at playing but i am still a bit of a novice.....

I have written a couple of songs, how safe is it to put them on here? do you know anything about copywriting the songs?

Cheers and keep writing!!!

Bert............

Re: Post formatted songs

Thanks Bert!  Glad you like the song.  I do not know anything about copyrighting - other than it is something I need to find out about.  I write songs just for fun, so the legal aspects are not at the front of my mind.

The creator of Chordie is working on a site designed specifically for posting & sharing songs written by the site users.  The site will include lyrics, chords, tabs, and sound files.  Should premier in the forseeable future.

My assumption is that if a song is posted on a forum such as this, then that could serve as documentation that an individual created the song . . . but I am not certain if this would constitute a legal claim.

Anybody know more about this topic?  If so, start a new thread to discuss "Copyrighting Songs".

Re: Post formatted songs

Hello santosrhythms - Welcome to Chordie!  This a great place to learn and share.  To start writing songs, just start writing songs . . . It is a lot harder to think about doing it than actually just doing it.

Scribble down phrases, words, sounds, and anything that strikes your fancy.  Observe keenly and listen carefully and work at expressing yourself.

Teach yourself a few very simple songs.  Notice that most easy songs follow a fairly predictable cycle of chords.

I think the best thing about songwriting is that you don't need alot of fancy gear - just your imagination and an instrument of some sort.

Wrote this ditty today - I am quite pleased with it!

My Geezerly Years by; James McCormick, Oct. 30, 2006

In 3/4 Time, a stately waltz

(For the occasion of my 50th birthday!)

Well I [C]used to be [F]charming,

And I [C]used to be [G]cute.

But [C]now Im just [F]honest

And [C]old and hir-[G]sute.

. . .

Ive got [C]hairs in my [F]ears.

Ive got [C]hairs on my [G]toes.

And less [C]hair on my [F]head,

And more [G]hair in [C]nose.

. . .

Geezer-[Bb]ly, geezer-[F]ly, [C]geezerly years

Geezer-[Bb]ly, geezer-[F]ly, [C]geezerly years

I am [F]happy to [Bb]be in my [C]geezerly [F]days

And Im [Bb]comfortable [F]in my [C]geezerlyways.

You wont [F]see me [Bb]cry any [C]geezerly[F]tears

Because Im [Bb]proud to be [F]into my [C]geezerlyyears

[C7]Geezer-[Bb]ly, geezer-[F]ly, [C]geezerly years

[C7]Geezer-[Bb]ly, geezer-[F]ly, [C]geezerly years

. . .

And I [C]really dont [F]care

If you [C]think that Im [G]nice

Im not [C]rude or of-[F]fensive

And Im [C]always po-[G]lite

. . .

But I [C]wont put on [F]airs

Or pre-[C]tend to be [G]cool

Ill just [C]tell you the [F]truth

And Im [G]nobodys [C]fool

. . .

(CHORUS)

. . .

As a [C]young man I [F]tried

To be [C]so debon-[G]air

And I [C]craved the at-[F]tentions

Of the [G]ladies so [C]fair

. . .

I would [C]try to be [F]handsome

I would [C]preen and Id [G]strut

But [C]now theyve stopped [F]leering

At my [G]saggy old [C]butt.

. . .

(CHORUS)

. . .

Well they [C]say that my [F]prostate

Will be-[C]gin to en-[G]large

And they [C]say that my [F]colon

May no [C]longer dis-[G]charge

. . .

And my [C]knees are all [F]creaky

And my [C]back gets so [G]sore

My [C]glasses are getting [F]thicker

And my [G]jokes are a [C]bore.

. . .

(CHORUS)

. . .

Some [C]geezers are [F]bitter

And [C]some just stay [G]mad

Some [C]geezers are [F]lonely

De-[C]crepit and [G]sad

. . .

Some [C]geezers are [F]jolly

And [C]some are buf-[G]foons

Some [C]geezers are [F]nutty

Like [G]stark raving [C]loons

. . .

(CHORUS)

. . .

As a [C]young man I [F]tried

To [C]peer far a-[G]head

But it [C]seemed by this [F]time

Id be [C]probably [G]dead

. . .

Well Ive [C]made it this [F]far

With the [C]help of my [G]friends

And we will [C]all keep on [F]truckin

Till our [G]roads find their [C]ends

. . .

(CHORUS)

Re: Post formatted songs

Hello Altex - coming up with words for a song gets a little easier the more you just keep trying . . . see the 'Where to Start' thread and other topics here on the Songwriting forum.

If you want to write songs - just keep at it and have fun trying new approaches.  You will probably discard more ideas than you finish - but that's part of the fun.

Re: Post formatted songs

The human voice is a natural instrument that anybody can learn to play well.  Everybody knows that it takes effort to learn to play a guitar (or any other 'non-natural' instrument) well.  It also takes deliberate effort and dedication to learn how to play your natural vocal instrument well.

For some, vocalizing comes easily.  For others, it takes more time (and courage) to produce a steady tone and convey melodic meaning.  It is well worth the effort because singing is a truly joyous, expressive and sensual artform.

Don't assume that you 'can't sing' - learn a little about proper posture, breathing, vocal support and basic vocal technique.  You will be surpised what a difference a few basics (and real practice) can make.

Altex, maybe you'll never be an operatic tenor, but if you approach learning to sing with serious intent (and proper technique) your ability will improve dramatically.
