Topic: Greatest Christmas Song Ever?

Hey there, with the holidays coming up, i was curious as to what the well-educated masses here at Chordie thought of good old Christmas music. I have a few favorites, mostly good old classic stuff, The Christmas Song, Silver Bells, etc... But right now im listening to the Trans-Siberian Orchestra's album Christmas Eve and Other Stories, and well, to say i'm impressed would be putting it mildly. What strikes me most about the songs on the cd is the fact that the guitar is featured in so many of them. In Silent Nutcracker, for instance, the entire song is two acoustic players playing the various songs from the classic Nutcracker ballet. in Mad Russian's Christmas, heavy distortion smashes through what most people only know as the Home Alone theme song. Overall, an incredible Christmas album.

But i get off track. My question is, what is everyone's favorite Christmas song? if you know the artist list him/her/them too.

Thanks!

Re: Greatest Christmas Song Ever?

I've always enjoyed "Christmas In Dixie" by Alabama. There's a lot of good Christmas songs no doubt, but that's my personal favorite.

Re: Greatest Christmas Song Ever?

I'll have to specify two favorites - one secular and one sacred. My favorite secular Christmas song is "The Christmas Song" by Bob Wells and Mel Torme (Chestnuts roasting on an open fire). The melody is gorgeous and the lyric is full of lovely images. As far as religiously-themed songs, my favorite is "Lo, How a Rose Eer Blooming". Again, the melody is lovely and the lyric is wonderful.

Both of these tunes are a joy to sing - although 'Chestnuts' is probably better suited to piano accompaniament rather than guitar. 'Lo How a Rose' is an ancient tune and is probably most authentically sung by a lute player clad in a codpiece. . .

Re: Greatest Christmas Song Ever?

alright i know this isnt traditional or anything but father christmas by the kinks is awesome! my favorite traditional song is probably "chestnuts roasting over an open fire" like the other guy said. also if you ever get a chance to listen to the original alan lomax version of "rise up shepherd and follow" i reccomend it, especially if your really into folk music.

Re: Greatest Christmas Song Ever?

Not all that keen on Christmas songs to be honest. However, I stumbled upon White Christmas (the Stiff Little Fingers version) earlier today, hadn't heard it for a long time. Now if only they were all played as well as that!

Didn't half put a smile on my face though.

Recorded at the Appollo, eh? I never knew that. Every day is a school day.

Unfortunately I was born too late in life and never had the pleasure of going to a gig there. Had to make do with the Barralands instead.

nothing wrong with the barras at all, just as good ( but not better) than the ol' appollo. And Slf still sound great there every 17th march for their annual st paddy's day gig.

all the best

Piping in a bit late I would have to say "Christmas At K-Mart" by Rootboy Slim is really quite timeless and a great favorite of many.

Happy New Year!!!!!!!!
