Topic: Best Band No one's ever heard of

I was wondering if any of you have any bands, or singers that no one much has ever heard of, maybe we could share them here, got any good one's? I found this band today I liked, maybe some of you have heard of them but I hadn't.

Re: Best Band No one's ever heard of

Well I was flippin through the channels and for some reason I stopped on the spanish channel which was airing music videos. They showed quite a few videos of this band "Heroes Del Silencio". I had never heard of them and, despite the fact I couldn't understand the lyrics, I thought they were pretty good! I'm not sure that no one's heard of them though, they might be popular in other countries and among Spanish-speaking people.

A little girl from right up the road from here, Beverly Jo Scott can get it on.
She married a soccer player and moved back to his home in Belgium and is rockin' out all over Europe.
She comes back here at least once a year and we see her as often as possible.

Re: Best Band No one's ever heard of

Band for those from south of the Mason Dixon - or north too!

Drive By Truckers - they have been around for almost 10 years with 8 albums - a large underground following - Rolling Stone calls them "Lynrd Skynrd's artsy nephews" A mix of southern rock, alt country and straight up R&B.  Songs about the culture of the American South, some are dark, some are bittersweet others just good ole rock and roll - my sig is a quote from one of their songs.

Re: Best Band No one's ever heard of

I think DBT are pretty well known. Jason Isbell is touring on his own, and 8 albums and a Rolling Stone write up is "people know who we are" material.  Great band, though.  They've earned their popularity.

I'm gonna toss up The Avett Brothers, and The Steeldrivers.

Great groups, both.

Someday we'll win this thing...

Re: Best Band No one's ever heard of

A couple of years ago there was a reality show in the US called "The Next Great American Band".  I don't normally watch these "American Idol" type shows but I liked this one.

My favorite band were these guys:  Sixwire
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5B-UPHBNskY

They came second to a group called the Clark Brothers.  I haven't heard anything else from either of them since.

Re: Best Band No one's ever heard of

Gregory Alan Isakov

^ He's a singer/songwriter that isn't very well known. His songs involve pretty simple chords, but they're paired with wonderful lyrics. I love his voice. It kind of reminds me of Greg Laswell's voice, but not as deep..

Two great songs to check out are "Virginia May" and "Big Black Car'.

His Leonard Cohen cover of "One Of Us Cannot Be Wrong" is good too!

Of course, most of you will know Newton Faulkner but this was in 2004 and he's playing with a mate of mine Pete Cranham. Check out Pete as he plays the drums AND the bass AT THE SAME TIME!!! Very talented man.

And this another mate of mine, Tim Hain, doing a number at a Freddie King tribute night. This guy has a strong following in the South East of England and he played at my wedding last year but he should be a superstar. If you get the chance go and see Tim live, it's an experience you'll never forget. Live the life you love, love the life you live.

Re: Best Band No one's ever heard of

Alec Empire (of Atari Teenage Riot "fame") has an awesome back catalogue - really varied - check out "Futurist" to start with. I would definitely take the song "Kiss Of Death" to my desert island.

Johnny Dowd - amazing rock/swampy blues with apocalyptic religiosity and a very male view of the eternal battle of the sexes. This guy can't sing a note, and didn't make his first CD until he was 49. I'll be watching him for the third time on May 24th at Newcastle's Cluny venue. If you're in the North East, don't miss it. A bargain at £12 a ticket.

Apples In Stereo - quirky, intelligent, occasionally beautiful pop music.

Jimmy Swift Band - straightforward torch rock'n'roll with a dash of trancey electronica to liven things up. A Canadian band who never show up in the UK. Keyboardist Aaron Collier's solo album is also worth a listen.

Detroit Cobras - retro soul/rock'n'roll. Also never show up over here.

Drive By Truckers - why don't this band rule the world?

Girls - downloaded 2011's "Father, Son, Holy Ghost" and it's the absolute dogs. Somebody get an easy version of "Honey Bunny" on here!

Damien Jurado - born twenty years earlier, would have been as revered as Dylan.

Octoberman - distinctive vocals and clever songs.

Tokyo Police Club - I nearly saw this band supporting Owl City - gig cancelled, possibly preventing the most mismatched concert in history.

Ex-Girl - Japanese art-punk. Unbelievably audacious.

I could go on and on, but you'd just get bored.

Happy listening.
