That Monkey

That Monkey

Can’t sleep, looking up to the mirror I can see
That bothersome creep, he won’t let me be
He shakes and dances, annoying as he can be
He stretches, staring me down, that’s my monkey

My monkey gnaws at me some more today
He snarls when he speaks, "I'm hungry", he says
He hugs me with strength, he wants to stay
I push and push but he’s not going away

This is not any ordinary pet
He has a mind and vicious purpose, that’s a safe bet
If I let him some slack he’ll rule us both all right
Don’t stroke this monkey; he's got a terrible bite

I’ll feed the monkey just this one more time
I’ll fill the hole one more time and get high
Stop scratching my heart raw, so cruel!
Stop squeezing the stuff out of my soul!

My esteem erodes a little bit more, I cry
My monkey doesn’t seem to mind
Without a soul of his own so he needs
To steal another’s, slowly he feeds

(Draining the essence of this man)

I think I love my monkey but I hate him as well
I want him to stay with me a long spell
I know this is wrong, I should be compelled
To be rid of him, to banish him to hell

His reflection looms, my monkey is angry
Belly empty again, he ravages me
Peeling back my skin and spitting in my eyes
It’s time to get high again, always getting high

Bleeding and blind I beg to be free
Of this wicked MF’er, this monkey
But today is not the day he leaves
See, the image in the mirror is me, I am my monkey

Re: That Monkey

That is pretty intense. Dark, about an addiction?  It feels almost 3 of them. I hope everything is better than this.  Very E.A. POE feeling.

Mal - Well, lady, I must say, you're my kinda stupid.
Mal - Jayne, your mouth is talking. You might wanna look to that
Kaylee - No power in the verse can stop me. BOOK-  you're going to burn in a very special level of hell. A level they reserve for child molesters and people who talk at the theatre.

Re: That Monkey

Hi FF, there is indeed a frightening quality to this piece.  Interesting; the hate/love for the monkey is nicely described; which is really a quality within oneself which is reasonably detested, yet loved at the same time, clearly unreasonably.
I think you've made some changes to the middle, which I like, but must admit to preferring the old ending better.
be well, best regards, ~T
