Topic: "Driver Blues"

Here is a simple little blues about one of my favorite pet peeves - dangerous drivers.  I am a very boring driver - I follow all the laws and I pay attention to what is happening.  It is terrifying just how reckless and oblivious so many other drivers seem to be . . .

There's [G]carnage on the highway, slaughter on the road,

There's [C7]carnage on the highway, slaughter on the [G]road,

Like a [D7]tragic demolition [C7]derby epi-[G]sode. [D7]

Hey, [G]I drive the limit, I ain't gonna speed,

Hey, [C7]I drive the limit, I ain't gonna [G]speed,

Seen [D7]too many wrecks, [C7]I don't want to [G]bleed.[D7]

People [G]die on the road, it's such a tragedy

People [C7]die on the road, it's such a trage-[G]dy,

Just [D7]driving too fast, [C7]using too much [G]speed.[D7]

If you [G]drive like a fool, like a fool you shall die,

If you [C7]drive like a fool, like a fool you shall [G]die,

Just [D7]don't you take me with you, I [C7]want to be a-[G]live.[D7]

[G]All I want to do is get to where I've got to be

[C7]All I want to do is get to where I've got to [G]be

This [D7]ain't some kind of contest, [C7]stop endangering [C]me.[D7]

Yeah, [G]I wear my seat belt, I click it religiously,

Yeah, [C7]I wear my seat belt, I click it religious-[G]ly,

And I [D7]say a little prayer every [C7]time I turn that [G]key.[D7]

People [G]perish on the road, every day and every night,

People [C7]perish on the road, every day and every [G]night,

Just [D7]cruising 'cross town [C7]gives me such a [G]fright.[D7]

Stop [G]yakking on the phone, y'all hang it up and drive,

Stop [C7]yakking on the phone, y'all hang it up and [G]drive,

Please [D7]shut your mouth and [C7]open up your [G]eyes.[D7]

Your [G]car might be junky, your car might be brand new,

Your [C7]car might be junky, your car might be brand [G]new,

But the [D7]road don't care, that [C7]speed it will kill [G]you.[D7]

When a [G]drunk has a wreck, it is no accident,

When a [C7]drunk has a wreck, it is no acci-[G]dent,

Its a [D7]totally predictable [C7]idiot e-[G]vent.[D7]

Kid's [G]drive like crazy 'cause they think they are immune,

Kid's [C7]drive like crazy 'cause they think they are im-[G]mune,

They don't [D7]have any sense and they [C7]die way too [G]soon.[D7]

Old [G]people can't see, they can't hear, they can't react,

Old [C7]people can't see, they can't hear, they can't re-[G]act,

They [D7]drive like they're brains are [C7]no longer in-[G]tact.[D7]

Some [G]maniacs drive like they're playing some video game,

Some [C7]maniacs they drive like they're playing some video [G]game,

[D7]Swerving through the traffic like a [C7]snake that's gone in-[G]sane.[D7]

Some [G]idiots believe that the laws do not apply,

Some [C7]idiots believe that the laws do not ap-[G]ply,

They [D7]think that they are so special, I [C7]can't imagine [G]why.[D7]

Lord, [G]save me from the idiots, the drunkards, and the fools,

Lord, [C7]save me from the idiots, the drunkards, and the [G]fools,

They [D7]don't know how to drive, [C7]they don't follow the [G]rules.[D7]

Lord, [G]save me from the maniacs, the youthful, and the old,

Lord, [C7]save me from the maniacs, the youthful, and the [G]old,

The [D7]carnage they create causes [C7]misery un-[G]told.

Re: "Driver Blues"

Nice little number James. People forget that driving a car is a privelage and can't see what damage a car can do. I don't like tailgaters and don't tailgate. Guess that would be my "petpeeve" about driving.  "Badeyed".

Take Care...Badeye.

Re: "Driver Blues"

Thanks, badeye - Just this morning a person on a cell phone sailed right through a stop light right in front of me.  Had I not been paying attention, I would have been crunched in the intersection.  The idiot on the cell phone was absolutely oblivious, but I'm certain that her conversation was far more important than our lives . . .

Re: "Driver Blues"

Hi James,
On the 24th May last, we celebrated the life and death of my sons beautiful Girlfriend. Killed by a speeding car! All her family and mine are still so broken by her loss! She was a gifted acoustic guitar player, taught by her Dad, Another great Musician, who has not lifted his guitar to play since her Demise.

These mindless morans, Fractured all our lives forever!   To see the pain in my own Son was and still is so painful.   At times so bad was her loss i wanted to Annililate my own Consciousness to stop the hurting inside of me!
Isnt it strange your song " Happy Cute" always reminds me of her,and here you are writing songs about dangerous driving!
My brother suggested Chordie to me at the time to take my mind elsewhere for awhile?   I am so glad i did, as it helped  me greatly.
She loved C/W music. Even as i sit here "Her brilliant Smile is Beaming at me from her Photograph!  Thank you James McCormick for using your God given
words to try and get this message across,
May you live long!

Re: "Driver Blues"

Old Doll, So sorry to hear of your tragic loss.

I try to remember that people who are bad drivers are not necessaryily bad people - but the consequences of bad driving can create grief and devastation.

It seems many people feel invincible behind the wheel and they don't appreciate the seriousness of their responsiblity to follow laws and behave in an appropriate manner.  As a young man, I was involved in a very scary collision (not my fault).  That experience taught me to appreciate and respect the forces involved in moving vehicles.
Drive Nice!
James
