They are Greek , They  come as 6 or 8 string  tuned in pairs  ,I  have  an  irish  resonator  one   which  is   tuned  like   a  mandolin  but  is  a  similar  size  to  the  Bouzouki .

It is spelt bouzouki and it is from Greece.

My friend Howard, who owns the shop I help out in, owns and plays one. The Rock Choir was requested to perform Hava Nagila last August at a ladies birthday party and he used the bouzouki, each round got faster, eventually so fast that the singers were unable to keep up and the band took over. Great fun.
