Topic: My Pink Floyd Conundrum!

I've been playing now for just over 20 years and have been struggling really hard to learn the opening riff to the live version of the song, The Embryo.

I've got the vocal parts down alright and the middle fx I can wing them but the guitar riff in the begining is driving me mad!  Here's a link to my insanity and if ANYONE can help me figure this out in tab I would be eternally grateful!

I know it's based around the 12th or 14th fret but then I'm lost.

Many thanks.

Cheers

Re: My Pink Floyd Conundrum!

Do you know the blues and minor pentatonic scales?

Re: My Pink Floyd Conundrum!

Thanks for posting the link for "The Embryo". I'm also a long-time Pink Floyd fan, but had never heard this one before ... great song! Gilmour is a real sonic specialist, and is able to create mood and emotion better than most. He may not have the flash & sparkle of some other high-speed guys, but that doesn't make him any less skilled in my books.

Re: My Pink Floyd Conundrum!

To Baldguitardude, no sorry i do not know any scales, mostly self taught and a lot of TAB otherwise I would've probably figured it out by now!  I learned very poorly at first, 2 semesters in high school over 20 years ago now.

Re: My Pink Floyd Conundrum!

look up pentatonic scale  and major scales.  the pentatonic is the "blues scale" and used for all kinds of music.

Re: My Pink Floyd Conundrum!

Yeah...that whole thing is just a minor pentatonic riff after another. You'll get a lot of use out of Beamer's suggestion!

Re: My Pink Floyd Conundrum!

Ok Thanks Beamer, I'll see what i can do with that.  Sorry for the late reply, pneumonia makes one a little late getting back to answers!  Cheers for the advice and link!

Re: My Pink Floyd Conundrum!

sounds like he's using ultra light strings as he bends the notes way up. i use a 9 gauge set-up and i'd still have to slide as opposed to bend. bendiest strings i know of are the one maker i wont use which are "ernie ball", too bendy, just too bendy.

Ask not what Chordie can do for you, but what you can do for Chordie.

or tune down.

Re: My Pink Floyd Conundrum!

munkshoo, you are getting some great advice from above, once you get the panitonic minor and major you will be able too jump into most any song, that's a good reason too give it alot of attenion.

Re: My Pink Floyd Conundrum!

The tricky part of learning many of David Gilmour's solos is that he does so much bending, and often in places one wouldn't normally look for it. Gilmour really took this technique to a higher level than most guitarists, and when coupled with a lot of whammy bar use on his Strat, it's hard to decide what he's doing at times. If you watch the "Pulse" video, there are times when he's simultaneously stretching 3 strings almost entirely across the neck (Comfortably Numb). Must be using 8's or 9's in the EB Slinky series.

Re: My Pink Floyd Conundrum!

There's a video of band called Airbag covering it and I know it's in and around the 12 fret area for the intro but I'm just missing some spots.  Gilmour makes it sound so easy too!  Been trying, Oh how I have been trying!  Thanks for all the help !  Much Appreciated!
