Topic: Up and Down

I like to use duality in songs I write so I got to thinking of how sometimes I can be on a roll at work, life and every where else and other times nothing I do goes right. I've also noticed that if I can laugh at my bad luck, which is not always easy, I can usually get over it a whole lot faster. So that is what this song is about. I hope you like it.

Up and Down By Jeff Gilpin

July 11th, 2007

Intro

[F] [G] [C] [F] [F] [G] [C]

Verse 1

[C]When I'm up [F]I can't get much [C]higher

[G]Everything turns [F]out just like I [C]planned [G] [C]

[C]Tough stuff just [F]seems to comes off [C]easy

I [G]don't even [F]blister my [C]hands

[F]But when [C]things go [E]bad I have to [Am]laugh[G]

And [F]hope no one [G]takes a photo[C]graph

Chorus

[G]I've had plenty of ups and my [F]fair share of [C]downs

So [E]Lord please help me to re[Am]member[G]

[F]Notto let my [G]head pull my [C]ups down to the [F]ground

[F]Or my downs [G]sink me six feet [C]under

Verse 2

[C]I've been down to [F]Poor Little Ole [C]Me Ville

[G]Wondering how I'd [F]ever get back [C]up [G] [C]

[C]Kicking myself for [F]doing something [C]stupid [F]a[C]gain

And [G]hollering back at [F]myself to shut [C]up

Then I'll [F]think of something [C]funny and I'll [E]finally get it [Am]right[G]

And I [F]climb out of the [G]hole I dug for [C]spite

Chorus

[G]I've had plenty of ups and my [F]fair share of [C]downs

So [E]Lord please help me to re[Am]member[G]

[F]Notto let my [G]head pull my [C]ups down to the [F]ground

[F]Or my downs [G]sink me six feet [C]under

Verse 3

[C]So if like me you [F]have this common [C]ailment

I hope you [G]understand you [F]have my sympa[C]thy[G] [C]

You first [C]must remember to [F]keep your sense of [C]humor

And [G]dispense your prescribed [F]laughter liberal[C]ly

Oh and [F]yes they're not laughing [C]with you they're [E]laughing at [Am]you[G]

So you might as [F]well join in and [G]laugh at yourself [C]too

Chorus

[G]I've had plenty of ups and my [F]fair share of [C]downs

So [E]Lord please help me to re[Am]member[G]

[F]Notto let my [G]head pull my [C]ups down to the [F]ground

[F]Or my downs [G]sink me six feet [C]under

Ending Chorus

Yeah [F]Don't let them [G]sink me six feet [F]under[G] [C]

Re: Up and Down

Oh so true, Jeff!  Without a good sense of humor, it is hard to keep one's sanity and pride intact.  Likewise, if one is too fearful of failure then you'll never try anything new.  I'll give this one a thorough mangling when I get home this evening!  James

Re: Up and Down

Thanks James and Brad - For some reason, and I'm not sure why, I had a really tough time writing this one. It's a short song that took me a long time by my standards to write. I had a gospel kind of idea in my mind when I started writing it but I think it turned out to be more folk rockish which is what I usually turn out I guess but I spend a goodly portion of yesterday evening struggling with it. The chord sequence of 'CEAmG' in the 5th verse line was kicking my butt for awhile (I knew I wanted the E but I started with an F following it and that didn't sound right to me) and the lyrics for the second verse took me a while as well and I might have stretched the rhyme of "Get Up" and "Shut Up" but hey, it worked for me.  smile

Re: Up and Down

Way to go Jets, you worked it out. I do that as well and if nothing comes I'll let it be for a while and come back to it.
Hey you are truly a writing machine. Good stuff.

Take Care...Badeye.

Re: Up and Down

Goodnight to you Jets,

I read this some where sometime! Quote " Any Person always feeling sorry for himself " should be " end of. So we must laugh always  even at ourselves.
Good song!

Re: Up and Down

Hello Jeff,

Nice song, having suffered more than my fair share of downs lately your song is like the light at the end of the tunnel. Laughter is a great healer and uplifter.

Thank you,

roger
