Topic: Piano: Stringed or Percussion?

I've always thought of it as a stringed instrument and not because in order to get my music degree in percussion (which I didn't), I would have had to play a recital, but because percussion music is all on one line and much simpler to learn. There. I said it: I'm just a dumb drummer. smile

Anyway, what if I wanted to post about the piano? Is it allowed? It might fit into the Music Theory section.

This is an age old debate.

A harpsichord is considered a stringed instrument because the plectrum actually pluck the strings, whereas piano strings produce a note when they're struck, like a xylophone or glockenspiel ... and they're considered percussion instruments.

In the end, who really cares where we put them in our classification systems? It's all about the music!

the clue is the name on the tin....CHORDIE... if it plays chords....

if the site was called "strummie" then that might be a different matter

Or are you saying one strums a piano, I can't tell.

hang on a minute there Bill, i was not criticizing just trying to be humorous. i love piano/keyboards and was trying or failing to support your point, eg; piano is not strummed yet it has strings, and the strings are thumped but is not a drum!!!! does it matter? it makes music by playing the strings and (unless it's me playing it) very nice music too.

i'm sorry if my post came over as me criticizing your post, it was not meant that way.

i guess no-one really gets my sense of humour. maybe it's me that needs to bow out

No, but if I may suggest a smiley or two? You're dealing with a 65 year old recluse of a man. I know that's neither here nor there regarding what you wrote, but It's tough for me to see humor these days.  A smiley would be a "take me by the hand" kinda thing, and I'd appreciate it. smile

i'm 63 and a semi recluse. my wife says i desert her most nights of the week to sit here looking at my PC (not porn cool ) so she says she's a recluse hmm anyway i'd rather sit here than watch her "reality TV" or the soaps! sad
