Topic: It's Not the Money

My Son just moved out of his barracks to “save money” because it is so much cheaper to live off post which means he needs money to help get set up in his new very, very small apartment. Anyway he asked Mom and Dad to spot him some money until his “pay catches up” which I’m still trying to figure out. My wife replied, “Sure, let me just go down to our money tree, pick some money and send it to you. Oh yeah, that’s right! Money doesn’t grow on trees!”.  So that got me thinking of this idea for a song. That being said, I hope you all like it.

It’s Not the Money By Jeff Gilpin

August 7, 2007

Intro

[C] [G] [A] [A7]

Verse 1

[D]I wouldn’t mind being rich

But I’d [G]rather not be famous

[C]I prefer that [G]people just let me [D]be

I [D]would not let the lifestyle

Or the [G]lack of style claim us

But [C]it’d sure be [G]nice to live worry [D]free

Chorus

[G]It’s not the money

[D]But the lack of

If I [G]had a bunch of money

I’d still be the [A]same

I’d [G]still eat chili dogs

And [D]you’d still be my love

But I [G]could quit this

[A]Money making [D]game

Verse 2

[D]I’d move to a cooler climate

But no [G]fancy manor house

I’d [C]likely move in[G]to a cozy a[D]bode

With [D]shade trees to spare

Maybe a [G]stocked pond over there

With [C]nary a [G]view of any[D] road

Chorus

[G]It’s not the money

[D]But the lack of

If I [G]had a bunch of money

I’d still be the [A]same

I’d [G]still eat chili dogs

And [D]you’d still be my love

But I [G]could quit this

[A]Money making [D]game

Verse 3

I’d [D]sleep outside if I wanted

[G]In a hammock in the shade

Or [C]inside[G] too it’d be my [D]choice

I could [D]holler up the valley

And [G]spend the rest of the day

[C]Waiting for the re[G]turn of my [D]voice

Chorus

[G]It’s not the money

[D]But the lack of

If I [G]had a bunch of money

I’d still be the [A]same

I’d [G]still eat chili dogs

And [D]you’d still be my love

But I [G]could quit this

[A]Money making [D]game

Verse 4

But I’m [D]all out of rich relatives

I’ve got [G]no kindly billionaire

Or [C]rich old ladies that [G]think I’m kind of [D]cute

So I [D]recon I’ll keep working

Un[G]til that cookie jars full

And [C]find a [G]place to settle with my [D]loot

Ending Chorus

[G]It’s not the money

[D]But the lack of

If I [G]had a bunch of money

I’d still be the [A]same

I’d [G]still eat chili dogs

And [D]you’d still be my love

But I [G]could quit this

[A]Money making [C]game[G] [D]
