Topic: Injecting Humour Into Live Shows..

There is nothing worse for a young person then  having an old guy like me go on about the past. What I am wondering is there a famous musical entertaners around today  that have an eliment of comedy in their act.???????? I am thinking along the lines of the way Dean Martin use to do a funny  part of his show with just him and his Piano player.
I will attach a sort of  a Southpacific attempt at been funny while singing Elvis songs as an example of what I am trying to find out.

Re: Injecting Humour Into Live Shows..

The funniest "old guy" humor I can recall seeing in a show is this bit about Prostate Exams by Jethro Tull's Ian Anderson:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7d3_gOPwSc0

Perhaps this sketch could be called "The Tail of Two Tommies"? lol

And we must mention the great Victor Borga. It could be debated whether his performance was a comedy show with music injected, or vice versa ... but he was bloody hilarious.

I've posted this before, but this is one of the funniest stories injected into a music act that I know of, by Newfoundland's own "Buddywhasisname and the Other Fellers":

Peatle
Garrison is one of my faves.  My kids used to make fun of me because I used to watch Prairie Home Companion.

There is a ton of great music hidden in that hilarious song.

Thanks for sharing.  Since its raining here all day- I'll probably look up more PHC videos on youtube.

TF

Pretty funny stuff.  Love the dialect, I had to listen really carefully to catch everything... a few words I had to look up   smile  !
Thanks for the morning smile.

TIG I am a Prairie  Home Companion fan mostly as a listener to it on radio. Garrison is a clever guy.

Re: Injecting Humour Into Live Shows..

That's incredible, Peatle ... Rowan at his best!

Was this during an Elton John concert? It would have been an awesome intermission bit.

Re: Injecting Humour Into Live Shows..

Milk Carton Kids use comedy - but it's a gentle more homespun comedy with dry humor in their act.

Also, Tom Rush is as much a story teller as he is a musician (and he's a wonderful musician). His stories are always a hoot.

I'll look for some links when I'm not logged in on my tablet. It's a huge pain to do links on my tablet.

Re: Injecting Humour Into Live Shows..

TIG and TF glad  you enjoyed Elton John interview.  Rowan Atkinson interviewed  Elton John at Hysteria 3 (1991) as part of a  variety show put on by a group of famous entertainers to raise money for the Terrance Higgans Trust.   Established in 1982, Terrence Higgins Trust  was the first charity in the UK to be set up in response to HIV and AIDS.
Zurf I look forward to your Links when you put them up,. Thank you for the feed back.

Here's a Tom Rush bit to which some of us may relate... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9yN-6PbqAPM

The Milk Carton Kids self-deprecating and dry humor comes through more in their stage banter than their songs. Here's a Tiny Desk Concert they did.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fp0xjVzmKxY

Re: Injecting Humour Into Live Shows..

Hey Zurf ...

I really enjoyed "The Milk Carton Kids". They've got that funny style of humor like you mentioned, but their music is also very good. There's I guy I jam with on acoustics sometimes, and if we ever got serious, I think this type of music is what we'd spit out.

Great post ... thanks!

Re: Injecting Humour Into Live Shows..

Here's a whacky old tune by Max Webster, performed by their lead guy back in the days, Kim Mitchell ... good for a grin. The lyrics are part-French and part-English, which are our two main languages here in Canada. Here's the song, followed by the lyrics beneath:

TF and  Neo you found some good gems there. Here is a parody of the song Royals  put out by  Kiwi Law Students. Shortland Street mentioned at the end of the song is a local television soap opera.about  a hospital.
